Wondering what you guys feel is a sufficient amount of rest before smoking one. I know aging years changes tastes etc. I guess what I’m asking is when is a cigar too young and how long after receiving a shipment is enough time to wait to start smoking them?

I always have one or two off the truck (and often they are great) but then I'll leave it 2-3 months (longer the better) to let them settle to my humi conditions.

I mostly rested 30 days in the past, but now rest them 60-90 days at least. CCs rested 60-90 days are way better than the ones with 30 days rested only to me IMHO.

For me 60-90 days. Occasionally I may deviate but rarely. This is all dependent upon though your stock levels I would say. Easier said when you have a number of already previously rest sticks ready to roll.

I try to do what it says on the RG boxes... smoke either within the first month, or after a year... i can't do the first, so i wait for a year from box date generally. If it's singles though, it's a free for all.

I used to nod my head and smile at this advice, then smoke one in a week. It was awful. Every time. Then I made it to 45 days. Tolerable. At 90 days I see a major difference in burn and taste. Now what's still young? Hell, I'm still trying to figure that out. Some seem pretty good young, but when one is too young, I can tell before the first third is over. I absolutely swear by 90 days off the truck before I start trying them.

I like cigars which are at least two years old from the date of production. So, I am resting cigars between 6 and 12 months on average.

Same here. I cannot recall bad cigar smoked ROTT.

Unlike many here, I'm still building my CC collection.  Read a lot of the posts on the site; and you really have to respect the experience shown by the members.  No doubt, resting 60 to 90 days (or longer) is the right answer if you have the patience and the well rested or aged cigars to smoke.  If not, like me, you have to experiment and find out what's right for you.

Since I'm still developing my tastes and deciding what I want to buy (and really struggling with the patience to wait) I tend to wait 30 days and then take one out, dry box it for a week at 52% RH, and then fire it up.  I try to only do this with CC's that I see other members talking about smoking great young.  I would say most of the time -- the result is I should have waited longer (2018 - HdM Ep #2, 2018 - HUP Mag 50, 2017 - PLPC).  When I find this I make a note in my logbook and then put them away for at least 6 months before trying another one.

Every once in a while, I find one that I'm sure would still get better with rest and age but, show promise.  As an example, Monte PE LMB JAN-18; first one at 30 days started out good but got bitter during the last third.  I remember thinking these had promise but needed more rest.  Decided to try one again at ~ 120 days and it was good (89 to 90 pts.). The inspiration came from a FoH TV review where I watched Ken and El Prez do their video review comparing 2014 with 2019 (?) cigars (i.e. young versus old).  For El Prez - the younger cigar won.  Yeah - gave me the push to try again.  Now the Monte PE is becoming a regular in my rotation.

Read what other members are doing, don't be afraid to experiment, and develop your own system of trying CC's!

It may be helpful for you to follow along with the experiment that a few of us are doing with trying cigars ROTT, at 30 days, and at 60 days.  The group (albeit small) has just finished the 30 day review.  The 60 day will come at the end of May and I'm guessing a few of us will post a 90 day as well.  The thread is here:

I've mostly been able to hold off for 90 days as El Pres sez. The few I've tried earlier from a box compared to the rest typically had burn problems or some issues with flavor. Have enough to choose from now that waiting is no longer so painful.

Yeah.  I'm impatient too.  But it makes all the difference.

That’s my issue. Not only impatient but my first cc boxes so it’s either smoke NCs for 60 days or smoke young as I stock up and let some age.

surprised nobody has mentioned this, but, due to certain shipping regulations, Cuban cigars are often forced to walk themselves across the border between their places of origin and destination, thusly finding themselves exhausted and requiring a period of rest.  90 days is a commonly agreed upon 'rest period', but if you take the initiative to massage your travel-weary/road-worn sticks on the daily, possibly placing them someplace cozy and playing them some soft jazz, you may be able to whittle that 90 days down to 45 or 50 ?

Everyone’s tastes are different so for me, if given the choice between smoking a cigar ROTT or not at all, I’d rather not smoke one at all.

There’s an incredible appreciation in quality from 0 days to 30, 30 to 60, and 60 to 90.  Then, it levels off for a bit until 3 years to 5 years where it jumps a bit again.  Your return on investment for waiting a minimum of 90 days will be immense!

When I'm ordering boxes online I usualy (if not always) receive them "vacuum" sealed. I know that these boxes could be stored in different conditions than my humidor has but what if I take my cigars and put them into travel humidor? Different temperatures affect this cigars as well. Should I smoke them if I'm on holiday for a week? They should be affected as same as cigars which I received from online suppliers.

I really like to smoke then ROTT and usualy they are very good. If not, it takes at least year or two for them to become good. There is a lot of variety of quality across the same box that I believe we should have more than 10 reviews to see any difference (also we should be aware of power of suggestion).
