Smokecigareveryday Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 What is your fav beverage to pair with cigar? I used to think bourbon and single malt were the best pairing but for the last two years I have been enjoying more with a cup of black coffee or an IPA beer- the bitterness of the coffee and IPA brings out the sweetness and makes the smoke more rich and luscious.
El Presidente Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 Do a little search as this is a topic well covered in the past 3
NickV Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 Lol pres can comment on that on every one of my posts I bet. Give us younger guys a break we are used to google where we get instant gratification. I don’t drink alcohol often (quit alcohol and started cigars). So for me I love a Red Bull at night and a coffee in the morning. Something about the caffeine rush and the euphoric nicotine relaxation I just love. When I drink I prefer an IPA as the hard liquor usually leaves me usiing my cigar as a chaser to the harsh alcohol. 2
SansSin Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 coffee or scotch is my go to, or water if i'm reviewing but i just picked up a case of dr pepper cream soda to try, keep hearing it pairs awesome 3
dicko Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 Right now I'd say my favourite beverage pairing is a good quality rum. But many other drinks work - tea, coffee, colas, alcohol of all types - its gonna come down to personal preference. I like a touch of sweetness in the mix. 3
WLC Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 I'm partial to coffee or water with my cigars, or maybe a Dr Pepper. 1
Connoisseur Kim Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 Earl Grey really works well with Connie A and MdO4 IMHO. 3
RDB Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 I’m a night smoker, so it’s hard liquor (Cognac, occasionally Scotch) and herbal tea (peppermint or fennel) for me. The key thing is that, unlike food and drink pairing where you want contrast, I like elements of the drink to mirror the smoke: sweetness (aroma not sugar) and richness. 3
IanMcLean68 Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 Coffee. coffee, and coffee ? Otherwise, single malt scotch or a good bourbon or gin. 2
Meklown Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 In terms of what I think goes well (in order) - rum, port, whisky, coffee, cognac In terms of what I have - Scotch, Scotch, Scotch, Scotch, coffee, coffee, cognac, rum Wish I had more port but I don't drink too much so hard liquor lasts longest once the bottle has been opened. 3
RDB Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 @Meklown I totally agree that sweet alcoholic drinks are a very good match. Sauternes, sweet Riesling, Madeira all excellent. Two things that might work for you are colheita (tawny) Ports and Madeira. Both are oxidative styles, so you can keep a bottle open for a good while. Madeira especially can withstand being opened for months. 2 1
Deeg Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 Coffee. And when I go alcoholic beverage, port or single malts. But ports are a slam-dunk and with Scotch, it depends on the malt. Rum is also usually quite good, naturally enough. Wasn't there some sort of "study" that showed that OJ was actually the best thing to bring out the taste of a cigar? It just seems like such an odd choice to me that I've never tried it. 1

Smokecigareveryday Posted May 6, 2020 Author Posted May 6, 2020 I try to stay away from sweet alcohols since the sweetness in the alcohol makes the smoke bitter in my opinion.

StogieSteve23 Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 Depends on the time of day for me. Morning: Coffee or Coke Zero with something on the lighter bodied side to smoke. Mid-day/Afternoon: Sparkling water (if I have it), ice water with lemon/lime, lighter beer or sweeter white wine (sauvignon blanc/sancerre) Evening: IPA, red wine (Cab, Rioja, Malbec, Petite Sirah), bourbon or tequila on the rocks, rum - neat 2
SmokyFontaine Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 Coffee with anything, bit of black tea with milk and fresh mint for medium to light bodied cigars. Wildcard - vanilla cream soda. 1
jbosma Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 Been drinking pure leaf iced tea with my afternoon cigars lately. Pretty basic flavor and clean aftertaste acts as a great palate cleanser. 1
dshot Posted May 7, 2020 Posted May 7, 2020 My favorite pairing with cigars if I'm not drinking is a big glass of cold milk / if it's after dinner then add coco powered to it for chocolate milk. If I'm drinking I like aged dark rum. If I'm out of rum then I go whiskey. If the wife is drinking wine and it's on the dryer side then I'll go with that. If it's a super hot day and to switch it up some beers work well it's not my favorite but works. Typically largers, session IPAs, pil's work the best for me. To hoppy IPA the flavors sometimes conflict too much. 1
JoeyBones777 Posted May 7, 2020 Posted May 7, 2020 It depends on the cigar so I'll give a more broadstroke generic answer. I've found the following to work best with most cigars: tawny port, Madeira, rum, scotch, anejo tequila and mezkal. Depending on the cigar I do occasionally enjoy coffee but it tends to overpower most cigars imho. Orange juice and champagne work with many cigars as well. Sodas, bourbon, red wine and many beer just don't work well with cigars for me. I've come to these conclusions through numerous smoking sessions with 10 - 12 different beverages to try with the cigar. Its fun with a group of friends. I suggest trying it at least once. I got the idea from El Presidente and his FOHrensics team.? 1
