Nudies N1  (lancero size) 2019

Aroma at cold :  sour rich, tart tobacco, wet leaf mulch, mint, leather, cut grass

Cold Draw:  A mirroring of the aroma.

1st 3rd: So I remain a little confused with my bundle, I won a Nudies sampler and mixed them up into my bundle of N1’s.  One that I smoked the other day was very similar to a prototype blend I was kindly sent by Rob.   Two others out of the bundle, have smoked super dry and tannic, which is no bad thing, but If the rest of the bundle do smoke in this fashion, i.e Very tart, and tannic, I do believe I may prefer the previous incarnation,  or maybe it’s just a hand made product, and there is a bit of variance.

This one feels like its one of my new bundle, and has started with wet tannic cedar, new leather, astringent.   I do feel as if this final blend change may have more accurately cloned the SdC series, but I think the other version had a bit of buttermint, I little bit more bolivar richness going on.

First inch in, and this is getting rich and creamy, wet leaf mulch, It’s a great deal more evocative of Partagas, but ‘grown ups Partagas’, slightly difficult, unusual, aromatic.  Pencil shavings, tannic wet woods.   Searching for that buttermint,  but alas it’s just not there in this stick……maybe it’s just the other ones had a 6mth headstart?

2nd 3rd: I should mention, the construction, combustion, tactile feel of the cigar etc etc are all immaculate. I think my bundle needs another year or so, for me to get an accurate take on when I want to smoke them.   I do think these will go exactly where Rob & Hamlet wanted them to go, and I think they will sing with a few more years down.

3rd, 3rd: JohnS mentioned a grassiness in the cold aroma, and I’m currently getting a rich balmy sour silage note.  Tannic dry palate beginning to build and get quite full on.  I little bit of mint coming through, but the sharpness of the tannic wood, is overwhelming the other aspects currently.    Heading into a part of the cigar with a much more balanced rich, meaty flavour.   Not like a bolivar burnt beef meatiness, this is a creamy buttery liver taste.  It’s all there,  all the building blacks are in place, it just needs time………….and just as I was giving, up,  Yes!  buttermint! and lots of it!,  expected to see it a lot earlier in the cigar, but it’s really nice rolled into the richer darker elements of the final 3rd.

Conclusion: A great project, and even though I think the casting verdict can only really be known in a few more years, I think it’s it’s showing all the characteristics to be a wonderful cigar.   I enjoy smoking young slightly in your face cigars, but I think these will hit their stride, when a bit of the tannins have died down, and the volume of the leather, mint, liver, cream, forest floor etc all start to rise up

Score:  91,  I few points taken off, as the tannic start was a bit overwhelming/obscuring for me.  final third of the cigar was awesome. loved it.

For anyone that likes cooking, I think this dish 'Sawda Djej'  Fried chicken livers with pomegranate molasses, would go wonderfully with these cigars

Ingredients

SERVES 4

500g chicken liver, washed and trimmed of any sinew

4 tablespoons of pomegranate molasses

5-6 garlic cloves, sliced thinly

1tsp of sumac spice

1/2tsp of ground cumin

1/4tsp of ground cinnamon

Knob of butter

1-2 tbsp of olive oil

1 tsp of caster sugar

Pomegranate seeds and coriander to garnish (optional)

Method

  1. Heat the oil in a pan big enough to hold the chicken livers
  2. When hot, fry the chicken livers until browned on each side, about 7-10 minutes, depending on how you like them cooked
  3. Remove from the pan and set aside momentarily
  4. Add the butter and allow to melt, it should foam
  5. Add the cumin, sumac and cinnamon and allow to toast for a moment
  6. Add the sliced garlic and fry for about 30 seconds
  7. Return the chicken liver, add the pomegranate molasses and sugar and stir
  8. Allow the molasses to bubble on a very low heat for about 1 minute
  9. Season to taste - I like to serve mine garnished with fresh pomegranate seeds and chopped coriander and or fresh mint

I will definitely keep an eye out for your review, Always interesting to hear your thoughts, Particularly with this cigar, it's pretty impressive what they've done.

My Nudies N1s, after a great start, have taken on a distinct unpleasant metallic tang. The last 3 or 4 have had this now.

Anyone else getting this? Might they need higher RH storage, being NC?

Cheers

I have had a few that have been tannic bombs, but it didn't register with me as metallic.

I think with this sort of old school blend, it will be inevitable that there might be some bumps and edges along the way.

Much like the original SdC series, to me I feel as if these cigars will hit their stride after 5yrs, but that's not to say they're not enjoyable now.

Personally I'v stopped smoking mine in the short term, and looking forward to them down the line
