Bmbroads Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 Hey Gents- was hoping to create a more permanent indoor lounge in my house. To do so i would need to put up a wall to block out a little nook in a room that’s unused.. needless to say I’ve been getting push back from the wife about doing something so permanent. Any suggest or solutions for how to block out a little smoking area in said nook that’s more temporary? Smoke block curtains, if that exists- something of the like? Obviously I’d get air purifiers and all that but want to minimize smoke escaping into the rest of the room/ house as much as possible. cheers all- stay safe
Squarehead Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 In order to get your smoking corner you'll be ending up to spent much more on your wife than on your corner?
Chibearsv Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 You will need an aggressive fan to get the smoke outside. I don't think an air purifier alone can get the job done. One very important note as you are experimenting with this idea is to make sure you block your air returns or the smell will get re-distributed to your entire house (lesson learned through experience). I thought about doing exactly the same thing you are in an area of my basement but I couldn't figure out how to keep the smell from rising through to the upper floors. I smoke in my attached garage with an exhaust fan in the ceiling, a stand fan next to my chair pointed to the exhaust fan, and I open the main garage door very slightly to make sure the exhaust fan is actually exhausting. It's the only way to keep the majority of the smoke smell from seeping through walls to the house. 3
medzikone Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 Air purifier won't do a trick. As @Chibearsv said - the most efficient is get the smoke outside. If you have a window in that room - just buy strong fan and that's it! During the winter I smoke in my kitchen with 50 cm wide, 55W power fan. I just use air refreshers or candles and on the next day it's almost no signs of crime. 1 1 1
Bmbroads Posted March 24, 2020 Author Posted March 24, 2020 Awesome- thanks all. I actually have a large window in the room and it’s on the top floor of my house so that should really help. 2
The Squiggler Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 As others have said, you'll probably need to install a vent fan to direct the smoke outdoors. A nice air purifier can help suck up standing smoke, but they don't do much for the smell (which will invariably make its way into the rest of the house if you don't vent it somehow). If you have a vent fan, fresh air will move into the room from the rest of the house as the smoke is pulled outside (instead of vice versa)... Some people have even mentioned leaving the door cracked while the fan is running as a makeshift fresh air intake. If the room has a window you can install a temporary window fan instead of a traditional vent fan. You should be able to get rid of virtually all of the smoke and odor that way. If you find that there's still a bit of smell lingering you can always buy an ozone generator for periodic use. Commercial cleaners use them to remove tough odors (just keep in mind you have to thoroughly vent the room after each use).

Str8BlkCoffee Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 I have one of these in my Kitchen in my apt. to vent cooking smoke conveniently placed 6 feet away from the cooktop and the stove ? However, it does work. I have a bistro set up about 3 feet away where I smoke my cigars and it will remove 99% of the smoke even if I am up and walking around the kitchen. If you do go this route I would find something like this design that is very easy to clean. The ones with the micro grill would be a PITA to clean. depending on the surrounding environment it may be more frequent than others. My fan is due but with the combination of smoke, grease, and laundry (yes, it doubles as a dryer vent-don't ask ?) it sees it fair share of use. 2
bbguardsp Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 If you have a basement set it up there. If you have one of those windows at ground level you can see out of your basement with - install a fan there. If no basement I don't have the experience to help any further.
LordAnubis Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 Go and buy a tent? Duct a fan to blow from tent out the window?

iannai169 Posted March 29, 2020 Posted March 29, 2020 That's one of the things that's not perfect. It has only small vent holes above the doors. I keep the one door cracked open and held with 2" Velcro. With the heater inside it's not a problem. When it gets below 30 degrees f I turn on an additional smaller heater. Not perfect but It was a cheap solution for outdoor winter smoking.
mrmessy Posted March 30, 2020 Posted March 30, 2020 Still very cool. I have ideas for a gazebo that you can close to for the winter with electricity and a fan etc. But that will have to wait for the next house... If there is one. If you have some thing to circulate the air in there, it would work well for the heat. At least it does for me in my current setup. Good work regardless! Sent from my SM-N976U using Tapatalk
cfc1016 Posted March 30, 2020 Posted March 30, 2020 This is making me miss my 'tundra fabulous' trailer lounge setup i had in AK. I honestly liked that even more than smoking indoors. Little 5'x8' enclosed cargo trailer. Ran power for a space heater and lights. Set up a wee futon and coffee table. Best part about it was that i never had to worry about air purification. Just leave the cigar smell in the trailer. Never had to fret over leaving windows open or buying high end air filters For the money you'd drop on setting up an indoor spot that wouldn't encroach on other people's olfactory sensitivities, you could easily buy and outfit a small-medium smoking trailer. It's like a detached garage, but you can tow it out of the way when you need the extra driveway space.
iannai169 Posted March 30, 2020 Posted March 30, 2020 I like the trailer idea. That would be better than my tent. I definitely want a separate structure. Like cfc1016 said leave the cigar smell outside. My plan is similar to Mr. Messy though. I'm planning to add a gazebo in the corner of the yard with electric and fan so I have heat and ventilation. A friend of mine in the neighborhood built a smoking shed with ventilation. He went a bit crazy built a mantle, ceramic tile floor, had cable installed and eventually recliners. It was a cool hangout but he recently retired and moved to Florida so now I'm planning on building the gazebo. This is an old pic of his shed setup before the recliners. 1
