SmokyFontaine Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 So I'm a bit of a coffee snob. I enjoy roasting my own, and have been known to threaten my dear aging mother if she asks for flavored creamer with it, but for the life of me, I haven't yet been able to detect "coffee" as a flavor in cigars. Can someone with or without a bit of snobbery help me out here? Is there a particular coffee origin that comes to mind when you pickup a coffee flavor in a smoke? Are we talking black coffee? Is it a gas station/Folgers coffee flavor? I'm just not picking it up. I tend to taste leather prominently. Maybe that's what people are describing as coffee. Anyway, would love to hear your thoughts.
NSXCIGAR Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 Obviously nothing's exact as someone who tastes espresso might call the same flavor black coffee or dark roast. Black coffee, the JLS1/2 and Boli PC & Tubos No.3 comes to mind. Milk coffee or latte--some find it in the Petit Edmundo or Monte 2. 3 1
nKostyan Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 For me, this is primarily a pleasant bitterness and astringency that occurs in both coffee and cocoa or bitter chocolate. Grain good Coffee itself has a flavor bouquet of different components. 3 1
Connoisseur Kim Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 Cigars like JL2, Cohiba Maduro 5 Genios are full of coffee flavour. I call JL2 "Cigarpresso" due to its Espresso overload!!!! ? 2
Popular Post Fuzz Posted March 20, 2020 Popular Post Posted March 20, 2020 I normally pick up general flavours like espresso, milk coffee, mocha. But nothing so specific like, "This cigar has notes of kopi luwak, from the Yogyakarta region of southern Java, specifically Pawon Luwak Coffee...yep, definitely Civet #386 digested these beans..." 1 8
Meklown Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 The most memorable coffee flavour I got from any cigar was the one time I had a Partagas D6. I really felt like I was sipping on espresso. However, I've only had it once so there could be many other factors in play (stick variation, my palate that night, etc). 1
Wookie Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 Burnt sugared black coffee in H Upmann. Mocha/latte in montecristo 2
cigcars Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 *Upon first viewing of the title of this topic - I thought you were talking "flavored" or "infused" smokes of which I was going to say, "No. Don't do 'em: don't like 'em": etc. I now see you're talking of the different descriptions of the flavors of the smokes. I DO NOT sense "caramel", "nutmeg", "chocolate" and bullshit like that. And I don't sense any "coffee" type flavors either. Rather, toasted maple and raisins baked in bread with love from the hearth of authentic Cubans. 1
SCgarman Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 Roasted coffee- Upmann2, PC Creamy milk-coffee- Monte4 3

I enjoy my coffee very strong, and maybe this is the reason that I never really pick it as a flavour descriptor in cigars. I have sometimes noticed what might be described as a synthetic or instant coffee like flavour in cigars. I liken it to a Spanish cafe con leche. where the beverage tastes more of creamy boiled milk and caramel, than actual coffee itself. I would hazard a guess, that the majority of people that pick coffee in cigars, like their coffee fairly weak. I think it's just differences in palate's, I can often see vague notes of cocoa and coffee in cigars, but they are way, way, way back in my register, and sit in the background behind a whole host of other stuff. 2
Akela3rd Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 I too like my coffee strong and black but do get a variety of coffee flavours in cigars ranging from the full on espresso to mildly milky instant muck - I'm not a coffee snob but don't drink instant if I can help it. It boils down to frames of reference. Tobacco can't taste explicitly of coffee because it isn't coffee, but it can remind you of it. If you are a serious coffee afficianado you'll probably be looking for frames of reference that aren't on your radar in tobacco. To shoehorn in my new favourite phrase...Sent from GJ 1151 2 1
Sir Diggamus Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 It really depends on the marca for me. In Partagas, specifically the P2 and D4, I have gotten the flavor of a French roast or espresso roast, particularly the flavor I get while drinking a cup, bitter and strong flavor that lingers on the tongue. While with a Cohiba Coronas Especiales I pick up “beany” flavors. Coffee bean, vanilla bean. This flavor of coffee for me is like the aroma you get from a bag of freshly ground Kenya roast. And then with Montrcristo and Vegas Robaina I have defected a mocha note that is like a coffee/cream/coco blend similar to a mocha latte. Man, just thinking about this makes me want to grab one of these NOW. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1
Bagman Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 The most coffee cigar for me is a non cuban CAO Amazon Basin. It is like drinking a pot of DARK coffee with cream and sugar. I get coffee in a lot of cubans and it is one of my favorite flavors. But chase down a Basin. If you can't get coffee from that, then it may just be your taste buds.
CampDelta369 Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 I agree with others here MC#4 cafe and cream competing with cocoa. Dark coffee or espresso to describe more of the bitter finish on some marcas but usually other dominant flavors are present. I also enjoy strong pour over Illy or espresso black so I’ve not had a cigar close to being dominated by that flavor. I am going to start hitting the JL2 more after this thread to see what I taste. I just have not tried enough yet.

HDGSN Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 Rafael Gonzalez Perlas taste like strong black coffee. H. Upmann Connie No. 1s and Coronas Majors have sweet bread dipped in coffee with sugar flavors.

Sit back and let your imagination run a bit wild. Sooner or later you'll run across a bitter/roasted flavor in a cigar that reminisces of coffee beans.
