Hi folks,

I know we have some health professionals in here. What the length of time between cigars and doing a blood test to detect covidine/nicotine?

Fully disclosed 1-3 cigars a week but would prefer not to get flagged.

cheers

All depends on how your body metabolizes nicotine. Some folks can get by on a 3 day free cleansing. Others up to 2 weeks. It depends on the test sensitivity as well. Someone very close to me passed a saliva test after 3 days clean. 3-4 cigars a week isn’t exactly sucking 2 packs of sick sticks a day... If you know the test is coming, just lay off for a week prior.

It also depends on the test. If it’s a blood test you can probably count on 2-3 days being a safe period of abstinence for most substances including nicotine. For saliva maybe a little longer, but I’m not exactly sure. Urine tests take the longest to clear, but I’m not sure if they even do urinalysis for nicotine.

Depending on what it is for, the shear act of disclosing 1-3 a week will be enough to get tagged as a smoker regardless of the test results.

Yep.  Safest bet:  Do not disclose.  My uncle chews nicorette and takes a week off before testing.  Obviously there is a world of difference between nicorette (or premium cigars or even vaping) and a pack a day cigarette habit, but the tests don’t care.

The tests they administer to detect nicotine is usually looking for cotinine. Life insurance exams screen for cotinine via urine test, not blood. Dont know what kind of exam you took though.

Current blood tests can detect cotinine for up to 10 days after your last cigar/cigarette/nicotine exposure. To be safe I'd give it a full two weeks.

And Urine? 4 weeks?

If its for life insurance I wouldnt worry too much about it...they arent screening for nicotine in your blood...and a cigar smoker has little to no chance of being flagged...most life insurance companies consider an occasional cigar smoker as a non smoker...now if you have disclosed otherwise to your Doctor thats a different story...medical recs with notation of a smoker could flag you.

A couple years ago I had underwriting for life insurance. I totally forgot and the day before the blood/urine test I smoked a Lusi. All clear. I was shocked.

Ok I will be the prick in the crowd....is it really worth risking an issue if you were to die and have your life insurance revoked when it came time to pay out? Over a few bucks a month of premiums? If you are willing to buy a box or two per month, isn't a few more bucks for the piece of mind on your life insurance worth it? It was for me.

Did you read the original post?

I was smoke free for three weeks about 20 years ago and was classified as a smoker by the insurance co. Can't help but think the test is better now.

I disclosed 15 cigars a month but got the flu 10 days prior to the test for my life insurance. Came up clean and considered nonsmoker. I agree with @avaldes that it is far better to disclose than not, regardless of what the test is for.

Urine tests range from 1-3 weeks, 4 weeks to be safe. But these are really guidelines. There are factors like age and health that will impact how well your body processes these substances.

Yes, and if you disclosed that amount and you smoke that amount, your test data will reflect that.

Based on the context of your question and the type of responses, it is reasonable to infer that the implication was how to avoid nicotine detection during a screening test.

BTW, this discussion circles around a couple times per year on cigar boards. Some dick always comes along an says "you shouldn't do that.....be like me!" As I stated, I was going to play the role of the a-hole in the crowd. It really doesn't affect me or anyone at all.

I go a full month prior and have never been flagged for urine or blood issues.  I don’t know if there is anything to it, but always felt like getting some good workouts and sweating in would help flush it out.

I’ll bet you’re the type of guy who comes along when a guy is bbqing and tells him he’s doing it wrong.
