We stumbled on to Hotel Raquel last trip. We had the rooftop to ourselves and enjoyed drinks and a cigar. The building is amazing inside.

Isn't the practicing of any type of religion in Cuba illegal by government set laws?

Great story. And a moyel in a cigar store would do a vital job.

 “Rednicht! The kinder fershtayun.”*
*Forgive my spelling.

Not anymore apparently. There’s even a mosque in the Old Havana that opened in the last handful of years.

There were a good number of Jews in Cuba before the revolution but almost all fled once Castro came to power. The numbers never meaningfully reestablished.

No.

People practice freely as long as they don't criticise the state.

Religion being outlawed hasn't been the case since the early 90's (and it was pretty openly practiced even before that).

Interesting side note about that hotel. When we entered the lobby it was empty. We asked if they had a bar where we could enjoy drinks and a cigar. They asked to see our passports. The manager hesitated and had a discussion in Spanish with another employee. The employee told us the hotel was state owned and that we could get in trouble with our government for patronizing them. We chose to stay and the rooftop was amazing. Interesting for sure.

My old girlfriend brought like two suit cases of supplies to Adath Israel in 2001.  They really appreciated her contribution.

Are children generally circumcised in Cuba at birth?  Do the parents have a say?
