mt1 Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 I like dress boxes. The reality for me is half of my SLBs are a total pain to open and that's enough for me to prefer dress boxes. 1
Skypilot Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 I like the colors and art on the dress box. I don't mind the SLB but as others have mentioned can be tough open. I only have one SLB that opens easily. Reaching for a knife or screwdriver to pry the lid open makes me nervous....

Dynamo320 Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 No preference really but it really pisses me off when I’m not careful with a bent nail and it pierces through the foot of one of the cigars.
The Squiggler Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 I tend to associate my cigars with the boxes they come in, so I initially felt inclined to vote for dress boxes simply because more of the cigars I love come in dress boxes or varnished flip-tops. On the other hand, when I have a choice, I tend to go for a SLB, so that's where I put my vote. Oh, sweet ambivalence. 1
Puros Y Vino Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 While there are some very attractive dress boxes, I prefer the simplicity and durability of a cabinet. Plus, the warning stickers are easier to peel off on cabs. 1

That may be true in some instances with the ribbon. But if you wish to debate the fact that the cigars are not "round" in slide lid boxes you would be incorrect. They are indeed round and not box pressed. 1
dcbuss Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 I get a different feeling of anticipation opening a dress box...and I think the aura of seeing dress boxes in a humidor gives off a better impression. So I voted dress box. BUT it must be said that, I’ve inherited dress boxes from family members in the last 2 years...some taken care of well, some not. and the aroma from a significantly older dress box well maintained is kinda un-mistakable. Whereas the few slide lids that I’ve inherited didn’t have that issue. So even in perusing FOH auctions, I always tend to scroll past dress boxes. 1
Corylax18 Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 I voted SLB, but the type of box isn't a deal breaker for me. I slightly prefer SLBs, but in the end, I don't think there's a huge difference.
Chibearsv Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 SLB; Opening them is like sliding the curtain open to a surprise, no nail required for shutting the box completely, and less chance for damaging that first cigar trying to pull it out of a too tightly packed box.
... Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 I prefer varnished 898 boxes for aesthetic reasons but I slightly prefer slb over dress or sbn boxes
Popular Post The Squiggler Posted February 8, 2020 Popular Post Posted February 8, 2020 ...surprised nobody has mentioned the classic glass-top boxes most of the ultra premium CCs are served up in. These are the obvious choice. 2 4
Piligrim Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 SLB is better for cigars, but more difficult for placing in my storage. IMO
FireMedic Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 I just prefer the look of the cabs. Also prefer 50 but not as many options anymore sadly
ohbob976 Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 slb. I think they might age better? having a tighter seal
Mossome Posted February 9, 2020 Posted February 9, 2020 I prefer SLBs. There is just something sexy about sliding the lid off and seeing that bundle of cigars cinched by a yellow ribbon. I always have a small twinge of regret when I slide the first one out and spoil the perfection. However, it’s kind of a moot question. The box is just a conveyance. The cigar is what makes the decision for me. I buy the cigar I want, and take it in whatever box it comes in. Probably my favorite go to cigar is the HU2, and it only comes in a dress box, so I’ve got a bunch of them. The only one I know that you have a choice is the BBF, and all the ones I’ve purchased were SLBs. Any insight into why HSA offers them in both formats? I originally thought it was probably a specific market preferred one over the other, but if that’s the case, why aren’t there others with an option? 2

Shrody234 Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 Like my kids, one is easy and one is difficult (SLB never slides easily), but I love them both equally ? 2
renos Posted February 15, 2020 Posted February 15, 2020 I love the construction and function of SLB's but appreciate both the space created and nostalgia of a dress box
