WARNING : These will NOT be my cigars ...

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any idea what this is about ?

Received first mail last month, replied I don't know the company mentioned, no affiliation,
then today the second mail arrives .. they are serious about registering the flyingcigar name as a brand.

According to Chinese friends the China Registry website is legit.

I couldn't care less as I never intended to go commercial ( or I would have registered my blog as .com 16 years ago ).

Just curious as to what cigars will come out of this ...

Not Cuban ones for sure.

Thanks for any clue on this.

Nino

Hello.

(It's very urgent, please transfer this email to your CEO. Thanks)

We are the domain name registration service company in China.

On Oct 7, 2019, we received an application from Kangwei Ltd requested "flyingcigar" as their internet keyword and China (CN) domain names (flyingcigar.cn, flyingcigar.com.cn, flyingcigar.net.cn, flyingcigar.org.cn).

But after checking it, we find this name conflict with your company name or trademark. In order to deal with this matter better, it's necessary to send email to you and confirm whether your company have affiliation with this Chinese company or not?

Best Regards

To whom it concerns,

We will register the China domain names "flyingcigar.cn" "flyingcigar.com.cn" "flyingcigar.net.cn" "flyingcigar.org.cn" and internet keyword "flyingcigar" and have submitted our application. We are waiting for Mr. Thomas XXX's approval and think these CN domains and internet keyword are very important for our business. Even though Mr. Thomas XXX advised us to change another name, we will persist in this name.

Kind regards

Gareth XXX

Spam marketing.  I get similar emails for the domains I own.  Nothing to take action on.

OK - thanks.
But according to Chinese friends that registry company is legit, so why would they inform me ?

How does one "own" a domain name ??

That was very nice of them to tell you in advance that they were stealing your domain name. They don't usually do that. I wonder if it is plane or cigar related.

Thanks - what "domain name" do I own ?? And how do I own it ??

I remember a few years after I took .de a US guy in NYC registered .com to sell ciggies ...

More like cigar/tobacco related I guess.

When you buy a domain name you have to register it.  You can find out who registered the domain.  You may want to register flyingcigar.com (currently available) and have it redirect to flyingcigar.de.  Last thing you'd want is flyingcigar.com be redirected to a porn site...  I'd jump on that right away ? even if you don't redirect the domain.

These companies in China comb through all domains that are not Chinese registered and send the same email out.  They make money by charging for the name registration for the Chinese domains.

Thanks @BrightonCorgi.

Good to know.

Will do .

And post this on my blog :

朋友們,

這是一責聲明啟事 -

若你看到 " flyingcigar " 相關字樣的公司或雪茄品牌,這些都不是由我出品,且與我無關。

請遠離這些雪茄,而若你想要抽到好的雪茄,請去買真正的古巴雪茄。

It's unlikely from my experience that they intend to buy those chinese domains, but you for sure 100% want the .com name.

@BrightonCorgi - Thanks man, you sure and truly helped me a LOT !!

I have just registered .com and .eu under my name and have managed also to re-direct anyone clicking on them to my .de domain.

Really appreciate your kind assistance and detailed help in this.

The funny thing is, I have 3 domains free under my provider contract, but have only ever used the .de domain last 16 years ...

Took this to learn about it ?

@ninoFrom what I see.  The Chinese domains are not registered (yet).  Should they be, I would advise you visit the sites to ensure they're not using your design or content as baseline and then adding other content on top of it.

Also, this site is useful in troubleshooting internet related stuff.  www.dnsstuff.com

Don't bother buying the Chinese domains, it's all a scam to get you to buy the domains through them with some BS that they were going to buy them if you don't.  No one is buying them.

I wouldn't even think of that. Thanks.
I didn't even "buy" the .com and .eu domains as I can have 3 free of charge with my provider who did it for me...

OK - think I get the modus operandi of these fu##+ers now ...

Has been an enlightening day for an old guy with no IT savvy ... Thanks man !

It's typical scam mail which tries to steal your money. I also had similar experience of yours, but quite different.

I received a strange mail from a guy from Linkedin (anonymous scammer called George Castro) long time ago. When I joined Linkedin, he suddenly sent a countless number of spam mails with phishing website called Zorpia to steal my Gmail account. Lucky that my Chrome extension blocked me to join Zorpia (I immediately contacted Google to block this scammer)!

Note. This scammer tried to fool me once again with the exact same method several years after I requested Google to block him. In this time, I quickly blocked him once again by listing him as spam mail. I'm still surprised that there are some scammers (didn't expect to see scammers on Linkedin) who can bypass Google's spam/phishing filter!

This. I agree. I received a similar notification regarding my business, website and trademarks. I turned it over to my attorney and he confirmed that it was a scam.

As most have said, it’s spam. It’s always a good idea to drill down into the source email address. Most of the time it will be a Gmail account or something other than you would expect a legitimate company to be using.

Thanks to all that have contributed. I am smarter and wiser now.

What made me wonder is that the sender's address, mail and website were all legit according to Chinese friends ...

Thanks All !

I have nothing to add beyond what has already been said, other than to say that I also get these emails very regularly.

There are, of course, several Chinese websites that host flat html copies of CCW that they have spidered, although none of them use a domain that resembles mine as far as I know.?
