Unlike some here who think certain folks will be naturally selected out of the gene pool for not believing the mass media hype. The World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and State and County public health agencies are not media organizations. What's more important than how ill an individual adult with no underlying health conditions may or may not feel is that we're approaching a tipping point. The pandemic may still be contained and quickly forgotten, or it may become an ongoing, perpetually circulating disease. Those are the options in front of us. There's an enormous amount of future morbidity and mortality, lost productivity, and economic disruption at stake. 2% mortality turns into a very, very large number of deaths relatively quickly. And if those deaths are clustered among children, the elderly, and those with health problems, that doesn't warrant dismissing or ignoring it.
medzikone Posted March 11, 2020 Posted March 11, 2020 Our prime minister announced that schools will be closed for at least 2 weeks. They canceled all big events in Poland. Cinemas etc closed. Today we had 31 affected people. We've already posponed our son's 1st birthday party for a second time. Only because of my grandmother and parents in law. Also after few conversation I had to cancel my farewell party. But of course you can find people who thinks that it's only huge drama. Then I ask them about their oldest family members. Wish you can't see their faces...

I can report how impressed I was with the measures casinos were taking wiping things down, with lots of staff dedicated to just that task. Escalators, doors, railings and machines - quite impressive and we could do more of this at the airlines. People are going to go to LV regardless,. even of the black plague was in full swing, but still the number of visitors will be way down. My BIL took a month leave of absence from his job at the airport just to see how it all shakes out. I feel sorry for the rank and file, this is going to be a huge hit to the tourist industry and will kill a lot of jobs.

Fuzz Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 A friend just told me that at her office, people keep coming by her desk to use her large bottle of hand sanitiser. I told her to get an empty bottle, fill it with KY or Durex lube, and leave it on her desk. After a while, nobody will be stopping by to use her "weird" hand sanitiser. 2

Subcomandante Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 My fiancé already works from home one day a week. They were notified today that everyone will work from home 2 days a week now and voted on what days. She got an email this evening and was told everyone is working from home 5 days a week. It’s crazy how fast things are changing hourly. And she works for a large Southern California newspaper. So it’s going to effect a lot of people.

Plenty of people there working out living normally. Went to the gun range yesterday with my father-in-law who is visiting us this week. Range was as busy as could be! Went out to eat with him last night as well, restaurant was fairly busy for a Tuesday night, almost a full place, and it wasn't the weekend. The school I work at did tell us to take everything home we would need to teach online classes if need be. Haven't received that notification yet. This isn't the end of the world as some are making it out to be. Unlike some here who think certain folks will be naturally selected out of the gene pool for not believing the mass media hype. My father-in-law is a physician, he said the people most at risk are those with compromised immune systems. So, if you are one of those folks, yeah, you probably want to be about as worried of this as the flu. Quite frankly, I think there are a lot of folks who already had it and didn't even know it because it is still cold and flu season! On the plus side, stocks are on sale right now! I don't understand why you're being so stubborn about this, I really don't. You actually think that Italy, the worlds 8th biggest economy with a population of 60 million people is putting the whole country under strickt quarantine just because of some media headlines? Or do you just don't think that putting a whole country under quarantine is a big deal? You don't think that the fact that the US is stopping all European flights is a big deal? This IS a part of the big deal. The fact that we're closing schools, putting countries, communities, cities and people under quarantine is a big deal. And it's not because we got some killer virus on our hands that's going to wipe us all out, it's because we don't have a cure for it. The share amount of people that can get it is causing the problem. Ok, so lets say just for argument's sake that this is a nasty flu. The problem is that it is a flu that we can't cure. But we still have to treat people that caught it, right? So we have to put sick people, people that are sick with something we don't have a cure for, in hospitals that's already filled with people that got compromised immune systems, people that's waiting for operations, cancer patiens, people with diabities, elderly, lung problems or well, just sick in general. Look at it like this. Let's just pretend that the hospital in question is an one room apartment that's filled with already sick people, like 20 of them with compromised immune systems. Now you have to put another 20 in this room, that got a "flu" that we can't cure but have to treat. So now you have 40 people that are sick in a room and it's starting to get pretty crowded. But tomorrow we will have another 20 people knocking on the door. Say like 10 with corona and and 10 that just need regular medical attention. You have to understand that this will be problematic, right? Sure, the ones most at risk are elderly and people with compromised immune systems. So? We shouldn't treat or care for those? And this is just the hospital situation, what about the rest of our communities? The only "cure" we have right now is to put people and countries in quarantine. That's what's causing the chaos. No one is thinking this virus is going to kill us all, no one think this is the end of the world but there's going to be a damn bumpy ride from now on. And my guess is that it hasn't even started in the US yet, you're not even at "Day 1". But I base this only on population/reported cases and that you haven't started to test the general public yet. It would be nice if you were right, though. 5 3

Though some aspects of this thread don't evidence it, I think we can.
Ryan Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 It's getting difficult here. The Irish government just announced closure of all schools, colleges and childcare facilities from 6pm today until March 29th. Retail sales way down, layoffs coming very soon. Luxury retail, including cigar sales will be, and are being, hit very hard. I was talking to an Italian cigar retailer in northern Italy this morning, he doesn't know how he's going to manage. Also talking to a cigar retailer in Seville, his shop isn't locked down but he's hurting. Here, any indoor gatherings of more than 100 people not permitted. Same for outdoor gatherings of more than 500. Church events, mass, funerals, weddings etc. all affected. All Twitter staff, globally, told to work from home. Google, Amazon, Facebook etc. will follow suit. The European headquarters of all these companies are within 500 metres of my house. The streets are very quiet. In this part of the world, this is unprecedented. It's the unknown.

I kind of do- I think. its because people (and I'm not saying fatherofpugs, whom I agree with on many things) have become so skeptical of the media, it has become difficult to discern truth from fiction, or an agenda driven story. Similar to the boy who cried wolf, we are fed such deception, over and over, that finally we don't believe anything from the media anymore. We see now, how dangerous this predicament has become. I'm not saying left or right here, both sides are miserably guilty of this. 5 1
