The Vigia are a touch pricier(depending on markup), but I think they are a superior cigar. 2
havanaclub Posted January 24, 2020 Posted January 24, 2020 Those are the prices if you go to Cuba. Retailers have to base their prices usually on local tax laws which can be astronomical in some countries. And make newer releases more expensive. We saw it with maduro 1 big time, we have seen it with the Vigia, medio Siglo the list goes on. The mag 54 is also starting to come down in price since initial release. So aside from the base prices and taxes, the retailers have their say. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
havanaclub Posted January 24, 2020 Posted January 24, 2020 Absolutely. It would be the same globally. the 46 is a staple of mine. That is extremely surprising. Would have never guessed that. Especially based on watching the number of times 46 is up vs 54 and how quickly they sell out. What is see is 46 up more and selling out much quicker. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

In some places, it goes by weight, so (I haven't weighed but) I'm assuming the 54 weighs more than a 46 and hence has that extra tax price added in too 2

In our case here, the distributor PCC has to make a profit, then Rob has to make a profit, and there are some taxes and/or duties involved as well. Even if you can go to a LCDH, it does not mean high demand cigars will even be there. I was in Cuba last week and could not find Sir Winstons, Mag 54 or Behikes. They're so popular they don't even make it to the LCDH, they're offloaded to better paying distributors instead, hence why the price is 3x or 4x listing when it reaches the retailer. FOMO definitely has a role too. Retailers will sell at the best price they can get away with. It's just normal business. Sir Winstons are not rolled throughout the year. Kinda like seasonal. Other examples include LCDH Salomones, Monte Esp No1 and Esp No2. Though it seems LGC Md4 and Partagas 898 have been added to this list unfortunately... And you will NEVER find Behike. Not in the last probably 5-8 yrs now. Those are a different level. Prices are not 3x - 4x for anything, only pretty much the Behikes. 1

You can't beat a corona gorda sized cigar in my book. It is perfectly balanced between ring and length, IMO. Each marca should be required to have one come in this size to retain their position in the cigar world. ? 2
Cigar Surgeon Posted January 24, 2020 Posted January 24, 2020 I'm currently at work and don't have my chart handy, but changing the ring gauge also changes the number of filler leaves used in the bunch. If we assume that the cigar only has 1 wrapper, and 1 binder, typically you're looking at 3 filler leaves for a 46 ring gauge, 4 for a 50 ring gauge Robusto, and I believe you're up to 5 or 6 leaves by the time you hit a 54 ring gauge. So if it's 5 leaves then you're looking at a 67% increase in the amount of tobacco being used, to say nothing of a larger wrapper being necessary which will also increase costs. 1

If that happens, it could well be the final straw for me. Not that HSA give a hoot, but they've increasingly and consistently proven for close to 20 years that customers of my tastes are customers that don't care to cater to.
David88 Posted January 24, 2020 Posted January 24, 2020 I would be pretty upset to see the mag 46 disappear, they’re a great smoke with a great turnaround after a few years. That said I think some of the criticism in this thread of the mag 54 hasn’t been in keeping with my experience of them. The ones I’ve smoked have been great cigars, good upmann flavour from the outset and ready to smoke fresh. Although the price is higher, I’m sure they’re perhaps 50% more than the 46? I think if you want a cigar to smoke now it’s worth that premium, as I find the 46 very mixed until they’ve had a few years rest.
