BuzzArd Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 I remember Rob desperately wanting to hate the “Double Banded Dollar Gobbler” and failing miserably.... I have had 4-5 singles (which were wonderful...) and still have a sole unmolested cab tucked in the back of the icebox. I’m on the fence about actually opening it and hoeing in. That’s an expensive box and I have a hard time popping the top on some of those pricey ones...
Lotusguy Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 Well, I for one couldn't stand the Mag 56 when newly released. This thread prompted me to trade for one from the current US box pass so let's see if they got better for my taste. The RACA on the other hand, I smoke occasionally - and in more than 10 sticks smoked, not a single one reached the sublime level of the very first one I had just after release in Germany. Fooled me into buying several boxes I think they are mediocre and won't get any better plus there is a pretty high percentage of boxes with thick, fireproof wrappers.
Akela3rd Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 You pretty much nailed it for me. They still appear largely "closed". Lack of vibrancy. lack of that RA fruit. I can taste it on the fringes but it is hidden behind some form of wall right now. I find it hard to read the future of this cigar. Re: RACA I agree with this. I've only got a couple left and they were excellent up to about a year ago. Last one of two I had I was disappointed in feeling that they'd lost the zing they once had. Shame they haven't lasted the journey they set out on. I'll wait until RA comes up on the weekly comp and post a report... Sent from 47171 Lempo
mbflash80 Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 Smoked another mag 56 last night and the flavors were great..but sadly the construction was absolutely frustrating...half the wrapper wouldnt stay lit...constant touch ups...resulting in smoking it way too fast.
cookj1 Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 In conclusion, it sounds like there are a lot of mixed reviews and still a lot of uncertainty about both cigars.
PigFish Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 RAPC.... Still smoking great! ....ooops, wrong question!!! - The Pig 1
99call Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 Just now, PigFish said: RAPC.... Still smoking great! ....ooops, wrong question!!! - The Pig A question to you Ray. You've been very good at documenting at how you've increasingly decided to unplug yourself from current CC production, and that you are happy with the stock you have, and also 99 to 2001 stock etc My question is this: No matter how much aged stock I build, young cigars are very important to me, and much like @El Presidente I enjoy wild, schizophrenic cigars. (Mag 46, JL1, PLPC). If you've stopped buying CC's Do you miss young cigars? , and if you do, which are those that you used to enjoy in their young rambunctious years?
PigFish Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 That is a very interesting question my friend. Frankly, I don't know what 'young cigar' is. As you know I am somewhat picky about water content. High PMC ruins what could be a very good cigar otherwise smoked at a lower PMC (MHO). Agree, or disagree, it is empirically proven to me, and what I believe. A friend recently sent me some RyJ Petit Robustos, whatever their factory name is... and I smoked one soon after getting it. I think these will be good cigars!!! However I think in smoking one 'soft' I likely ruined its potential. So, to come full circle, what is a young cigar? Is a young cigar a 'fresh' cigar? In my years of smoking, never being in Cuba, and never actually having a cigar off the rollers desk, I am unable to answer that question out of simple ignorance. Is a young cigar less than 5 years old? That being said, I have smoked many! As I have stated time and time again here, I think aging a cigar is overrated. I simply don't really believe in all the banter about how a cigar is doing this year and that, etc... etc... With no offense to anyone here, seeing that a cigar is smoked only once, the experience gained is subjective, not factual, perhaps fun, but nonetheless folly! A cigar that is properly 'de-gassed' is in its prime. (MHO) It will get no better and no worse... again MHO... If a 'fresh, or young' cigar is one with too much water, no I don't miss them. That would be like missing flat beer, or cold pancakes! Cheers! -R

I smoked a 2018 RyJ Churchill a couple days ago and it reminded me of the 1995 vintage I was smoking in 2000-2004. Seems to me after a proper gestation period, it gets down to how good the leaves in the bunch are. I'm wondering what makes a great plant and what makes it so-so? Is it the plant/specific terroir or is it the fermentation? Seems wine is much more consistent than cigars in a specific vintage.
Akela3rd Posted February 2, 2020 Posted February 2, 2020 Tried one of my remaining RACA (LAU SEP 15) last night out of curiosity generated by this thread...Still a good looking and clearly well made cigar. The draw and burn were excellent but, as suspected, the flavour profile has gone all to pot. Hints of fruit here and there but not the defined flavours of old. It started reasonably but by the halfway point was just woody and turned peppery into the last third. I've got one left and will forget about it in the bottom of the singles pile in the hope that one day in the distant future I'll get a pleasant surprise from it. You never know...
