Oh man, that looks incredibly good! Homemade or your joint?

The restaurant.  We actually got obsessed with them a couple years ago at Matt’s so we make them.  The newest thing?  Vegan Jucy Lucy made with Soy cheese.  Not my thing but people seem to like it.

The old Milk Bars were the best! The burgers simple and incredibly delicious. Fresh beetroot, egg, tomato, bacon... Heavenly... Dare I say, almost healthy. ;) Remember the milkshakes, where they used to be served in the old anodised aluminium (I think it was) cups? And the milk was scooped out from the ice-cream hold? Vanilla milkshake used to be my favourite thing ever.

Stupefyingly good. I miss those old places tremendously. Very hard to find a traditional one nowadays.

Yes! I remember the old milk bar near my house when I was a kid. It was a true vintage 1940/50s milk bar, with the round aluminium stool (with the cracked red leather seats) at the bar, the booths against the wall, tiled floors and walls, and the long bar running down the length of the shop. An old Italian guy ran the milk bar. I remember my mum taking my brother and I there after school for milkshakes. Served the same way, but in plain aluminium 24oz cups.

@Fuzz - So when are we opening Buns the burger joint, next to Cups the cafe joint, with Dope the weed joint on the other side (once legalised), finally Fuzzies the bar and a sleazier establishment out the back.

AuCheval in Chicago has one of the best I can get locally.

I also love burgers from Fatso’s last stand in Chicago.

Also loved in-and out and Fatburger chains when I used to live in SoCal.

Pop that yolk and I’m all in,

What the heck is a 'beetroot'? Is this an Australian thing??

Beetroot is the taproot part of the beet plant.

It's not a proper burger in Australia if it doesn't have lettuce, tomato, beetroot, caramelised onions, cheese, bbq sauce, meat patty and toasted bun. Chuck in a fried egg, bacon and maybe a slice of pineapple, for a burger with the lot. Good luck to you if you can unhinge your jaw to take a full bite of an Aussie burger with the lot. :lol3:

Pineapple neither belongs on a burger nor on a pizza. Disgusting.

Agreed. Totally ruins a burger. That is just my 2 cents.

X4        very few dishes in the the world benefit from adding things until you have a hot brown mess.

Okonomiyaki being the exception

But.....you can just melt the cheese on top of the patty lol. It all goes in the same place.

So many places make a great burger. My go to is In n Out or Bel Campo. Don't need to fancy up a pedestrian food item. Burgers should be fast.

The Big Sloppy at CHarm City Burger - Getting one today. Always love these !

There is another spot in Jupiter, FL that has a one pound and two pound burger that are also pretty good. But they are plain. No add ons.

Ahhh ok, what we call 'beets' in the US. Pass.

I love pineapple on pizza. I'll pass on the beets tho.

For me, I don't have pineapple on my burger with the lot. Pineapple is an acquired taste. Pineapple and a ham steak, or Spam, actually goes well together. The sweetness of the pineapple compliments the saltiness of the ham.

But as West said, to each their own. I personally can't stand seafood on pizza or pasta.

Okay, I love beets (beetroot) and cook with them often, also like them pickled.

How are you including them on your burgers, shredded raw, thin sliced raw, sliced and steamed, pickled?

I'm open minded and in fact recently tried a vegan burger made from beet and sunflower seeds.

But have no illusions I am a Meat Head.

I think in the pic of the 'proper' burger, the purple looking thing under the meat is the beet, which looks to be pickled.

We get these Morningstar frozen patties that are pretty good. The seem to be mostly black beans and sunflower seeds, and they are seasoned w chipotle. Fry em up, some cheese, lettuce, tomato... they are pretty darned good! But I'm w you...when I want a burger, a steer is gonna need to lose its life.

I can't wait for Colorado to FINALLY get In-N-Out!

???

It's canned beetroot. The beetroot is cooked, whether steamed or boiled.

I prefer sliced beetroot. It adds a sweet, rich earthiness with a slight tangy bite to the burger.

This topic has completely gone off the rails if "Best Burger Ever" has turned into a discussion about beets and pineapple.

I was a huge fan of Plan Check in Los Angeles. I used to live walking distance from the Sawtelle location. No old time claim to fame, and kind of a hipster spot, but delicious. The chef’s favorite burger in particular. Beer cheese, ketchup leather, hot sauce, bacon, and an egg over easy. Also had an absolutely phenomenal fried chicken with gravy and yam preserves. Unfortunately they changed their menu and ingredients and the magic has died.

Everyone who has tried it...About 10 or so. Best burger of all time. A different level . Brioch my secret sauce. You should be sorry. Yet to try ?

It was great.  And a very clever name.  I believe 3 of the 4 have closed and only the Sawtelle location remains.

My breakfast Burger two weeks ago in Hong Kong at Castro's in Tsim Tsa Tshui next door to Ned Kellys Last Stand.

The Burger was good, nothing spectacular - but the place is just great as everybody and his grandmother is smoking away below and next to "No Smoking" signs ...

And NO beetroots or pineapple slices on offer - just the basics, thank you very much.

And their Cuban Sandwich beats the crap out of any at the Nacional in Havana ... ?
