Hey Guys,

Im new to this and love smaller rg cigars love NC lanceros, corona gordas, robustos. I have been hearing a lot of buzz about these cigars and haven't tried any of them due to the pricing. I was looking for feedback to see which box I should invest in.

1) Cohiba Esplendido

2) Cohiba Lancero

3) Trinidad Fundadores

4) H. Upmann Sir Winston

5) HdM DC

6) Punch 898

7) Partagas Lusitanias

? Open to any that I have missed

Thanks for your help!

Well you're certainly starting at the top with your selections ?. Just missing the RyJ Churchill !

I would look at cheaper options initially to see which of the brands (or marcas as they are also known) are most to your liking.

You could do worse than getting one of the Prez's samplers from this forum.

Enjoy your journey of discovery and  welcome!

Hey Pete,

already have some RASS, BBF, RyJ 4s, Dip2s, HdM epi 2s, and Party D4s in my line up. Since CC take a little time to rest and she I’m looking to secure a box to put down to enjoy a year or two from now.

typically like med-full body/flavor And med+ strength. NCs have more of that pepper and strength on them. I have a bunch to go thru. But looking for those smooth complexities that come from CCs. If that helps at all.

also been interested in cohiba Siglos/Robustos but I figured the longer skinnies would give me more flavor.

Ok, I thought you were just starting out with Cubans. From your list and taking your tastes into consideration I would recommend the Partagas 898. In addition the H. Upmann No. 2, Magnum 46 and RyJ Cazadores are medium/full cigars that age well.

You should definitely get a box of PLMC when they come up here. Could be the best bargain in CC skinnies. @JohnS has reviewed these positively frequently and I can attest to there deliciousness. ?

I'm a huge fan of the Fundy's, so that would be my pick, but they are definitely not going to be near the fuller part of the scale. I'd get some Boli CJ and PC's if you haven't had them yet. Its honestly distressing that there is more selection in NC lanceros than Cubans at the moment (and I have several NC lanceros that continue to be staples for me), but of the limited CC lanceros I the Fundy is my personal fav.

I was looking into PL line, do you suggest the MC over the PC?

There are plenty of moderately priced thinner cigars. Monte #1 &3 are nice options. RyJ Cazadores as well. You seem to like bigger cigars but petit Coronas are a nice choice for a shorter smoke.

Short answer is both. Put the PLPC cab down for 3-5 if you want that Carmel but I am into a ‘17 cab and enjoy them now too. The MC smoke very nice now at a year so for the modest price on a box they are a must IF you like the Skinnies.

La gloria cubana medaille d'or #4 (commonly abbreviated lgc mdo4)

Rafael Gonzalez perlas

Cohiba exquisitos

San cristobal (SCDLH) principe

These are some of my favorite smaller rg sticks. Also, aside from the exquisitos, most of them are under half the price of most of the cigars you listed. Not a bad idea to let your palate acclimate to CCs with some cheaper sticks, before dropping coin on winnies and esplendidos. You'll appreciate them more when you've better acquainted yourself with the 'starter' (for lack of a less demeaning term) sticks I mention above. Not trying to dissuade you from hoyo dcs, party 898s, etc - just sayin you may appreciate their depth more, when you have the others to compare to

If you aren't prepared to age for a few years I'd say Trini Fundys are your best bet right now. 18s and 19s have been getting high marks and they smoke well young. CoLa, Monte Especiales, MdO4 and PLMC need at least a couple years IMO.

49 RG is NOT a smaller RG cigar... so no Sir Winston, Esplendidos, ....

I would recommend Fundies and PLMC.

looking for below or equal to 50g. I feel like that is where I typically I find myself gravitating towards. I am not apposed to trying anything really :)

I really like PLPs young. BRCs too. Vegueros tapados have been good to me too

Yikes. Is that what it's come to? Since when is 50 small RG? I think 30-45 MAX. Really, 30-42 in my mind are the skinnies. 45 and higher are larger RG.

Just do what I did. Try them all! Giant samplers lol

Those Trinidad are grossly overpriced. How many of boxes of PLMC can you get for the same price? At least 3 or 4?

4, I think :)

8 if you’re comparing with Esplendidos ;)

But again, you really cannot compare a Fundadore and a Montecarlo on the same level. Also, if you buy them on the island, they are one of the great bargains left, in my opinion (260 CUC).

Based on what exactly? On tobacco mass?!

I do smoke the PLM on and off, sure, but not a big fan of the, for me, pretty generic caramel taste, which I find oftentimes being too upfront and dominating. Like the evilking sais - you cannot seriously compare those two cigars, in terms of leaf quality and taste. Smokes for different occasions for sure.

Lol this is also not to say that I do not dislike PLMC, fresh and aged alike. They have their place, just as PLPC have their place as well

I would recommend to the OP a box of Trinidad Reyes to start with. They will give you a good representation of the flavor profile without breaking the budget. And still a nice 40 minute or so smoking time. Best of all you will have money left over for a box of something else!

I feel you on that one, I typically go for 38/43/46 rg. But I feel a lot of the cubans are 52/54/56. Trying to broaden my knowledge of these cigars I don't know too much about. In the NC world there are a plethora of lanceros to choose from. I feel that it is kinda lacking in the CC market. Just trying to keep my options open :)

I have sampled two/ three of the Reyes. LOVED those little guys. I felt more medium/mild on strength and body but they were both after a decent lunch. I figure the Fundies would give me more time to sit back and enjoy than the quicker 40min Reyes. Any thoughts on the coloniales? Our host always has amazing descriptors on 24:24 but have been hesitant on pulling the trigger.
