Vito Posted November 12, 2019 Posted November 12, 2019 Got a couple a PSP boxes in from FOH crew and figured I’d post some pics as I actually like the look of the wax paper almost better than the foil at this point. As far as aging goes, I figure it’s negligible but hey, I’ll at least be able to compare between wax paper wrapped and foil wrapped for whatever that’s worth when it comes to Cuban cigars. Although these two boxes, especially the Dips, I’d have a hard time believing there is a dud in the bunch even right now as they sit. 2

mwaller Posted November 12, 2019 Posted November 12, 2019 What does wax paper do for you? I'm confused. 2
Capt. Corona Posted November 12, 2019 Posted November 12, 2019 I've seen others wrap in a different type of paper before laying them down. For the life of me, I can't remember what it was called but it wasn't a wax paper. Supposedly does something "slower" to the box of leaf. I guess it may be beneficial in some fashion if you were going to put them away for say 5-15 years? I'm sure somebody can give us the low down on doing something like this?
Thirds Posted November 12, 2019 Posted November 12, 2019 Vito packing a switchblade knife. I don’t know about the rest of you fools but whatever Vito wants to wrap his cigars with is fine by me. Lol. Carry on, Mr Vito. Those D2s look exquisite...guessing those are the batch I was late on. Again, after seeing the knife I’m happy you got them and not me, Mr. Vito. Ha! 2

I'll get some of that and use it too in the days ahead with all my boxes coming in but there is really no real difference other than there is no wax on it. It's basically rice paper but thicker.

Mikeltee Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 I'd use butcher's paper to be honest. When cooking with wax paper, it definately changes the taste of the food a small amount. I dont know if it would penetrate through the box, but being wrapped for lord knows how many years I wouldnt take that chance with foil or wax. Now considering that you wrap saran wrap first I think that you are good for what you have done but in the future I'd go just butchers paper so that box can breathe. That saran wrap isnt as permeable although it is to some degree. Some vacuum seal long term storage which doesnt really make sense to me unless they plan to store for their great great grandchildren. 1
CaptainQuintero Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 Those Dips look stunning, I don't think I could be putting them away for any real length of time 1

Did you see those wrappers?!? They’re dripping with oil and the hygroscopicity to the tobacco is at an all-time high. I don’t know if the things would even burn right now. Probably not. I think I’ll wait em out. It almost looks like someone dipped the Dips in motor oil, used motor oil.

Booyaa Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 This is a very confusing thread! Glad you have found something that keeps you happy Vito!

Well I think the question you’re referring to is what I use for storage and how so I’ll just throw up some photos. This is all newer stuff 2017-2019 vintage. This is my coolidor at my office as I have one at my brothers that’s 75% full of mostly 2010-2015 stuff that is not wrapped, one at my place, and a small 70qt one at my dad’s. 4

Looking good! so why all the different wraps? foil, glassine, wax? Just trying out different ones? My real question was "why". What effect does wrapping them up have on the end product? Also once you wrap them what is the minimum time they stay wrapped up?
SCgarman Posted November 14, 2019 Posted November 14, 2019 Wrapping them does absolutely nothing, but if it floats your boat to each their own. If I were you get one 65% 320gram Boveda the biggest one they make and put in there. One will sufficiently take care of the whole cooler. 1

I know that if it does anything it is negligible, but yes, it floats my boat and I always thought it looked cool when Ajay or anyone would pull out an old box that was wrapped in wax paper. So I did it too. Nothing more than that intended, and figured I'd share my pleasure. I also subscribe to the thought that I read intuit article just posted by another member where they say " Fox also keeps his cigar boxes closed. “I was told once by an older collector that the nice smell you get from opening a 20-year-old box of cigars doesn’t go back in the box when you close it,” he says. “The smell has to come from volatile compounds. Why not try to keep as many of those compounds as possible as close to the cigars as possible for as long as possible?” I would imagine these guys from years ago were wrapping the box for some purpose but who knows. Maybe not.

It seems like there are varied opinions on this subject. The cigars Ajay unwrapped looked fantastic. @Vito your coolers look great. So neat and organized. Mine look completely tossed up!

That’s the whole point I honestly don't either because logic would tell you that the moisture movement is going to be changed very little, if at all, but again.....they sure do look cool and a lot of the boxes you see on the auction sites that sell old boxes from the 60's-90's. I mean just look at these ones. I don't know, maybe I'm a weird guy. Actually, I know I am and I'm fine with that. But I think the first two boxes are much more aesthetically pleasing than the third picture of the vacuum sealed box of CoRos with all it's plastic hanging off of it. So now I'm really getting weird because now I'm not even talking about or concerned so much with the function of it but more the aesthetics of it. Any benefit I get from it due to a difference in the aging process I'll consider icing on the cake. I've already got the cigars and for me, that's most of the satisfaction. Just knowing they're marinating away in my possession in my coolidor. Again, a real weirdo!! 1
