In another life...your alternate career paths

I wanted to be an electrical engineer specialising in analog circuitry when I was a teen. I work in pharmaceuticals manufacturing instead lol.

About 14yrs ago I was working a job I hated in the San Francisco area and doing stand up comedy on the side. I had to choose between that and moving to a community with a fairly nonexistent comedy seen. Chose to move, and humility aside, ended up making a great career that paid faaar better than I could have imagined and became a bit of a fixture in a niche industry. In about a week I am leaving that career to start a new one in a new industry and it's scary and exciting all over again.

But a part of me always wonders what if I stuck with comedy. A couple of acquaintances made it pretty big. TV, movies, taped comedy specials.

About 20 miles north of Seattle. One of these days I’m gonna make it out to the Atlanta area to play golf. Lots of great golf around there. Maybe when I do we would link up for a smoke

If I were better in school as a kid and more dedicated to studying, I would have wanted to become a pediatrician.  I always thought about that growing up because I used to hate going to the doctor as a kid even for a routine check-up.  I thought to myself "how many kids hate going to their doctor for any reason"?  I've always been pretty good with kids and would have liked to make their medical experiences fun rather than dull and monotonous. 

If not that, I would have loved to have been PGA teaching pro at a private club somewhere.  I've played golf since I was about 2 but never took it seriously until I got into high school but by that time I was full force in playing baseball.  After I hurt my knees catching in high school I finished out my senior year and took up golf a lot more seriously.  My aunt has always been a Class A teaching pro and I saw the gratification/happiness she brought to people by teaching them the game of golf.

I've been reading through this thread to maybe find my next career. Like many of you, I have been on different career paths.

In April I separated from my employer during the quarantine. Soon after a college friend reached out to me seeking help researching blockchain. I love digging deep on subjects and synthesizing the information. I hope to make a steady income writing white papers. The thought of freelancing is too stressful. Not sure if this will work out, but all my other ideas are not practical in our COVID world.

When you open up doors and have a serious educated crack, use that normal anxiousness/ fear as fuel. Everyone gets to feel it. Assess the opportunities certainly, but don't let fear of the unknown automatically push you back behind the door. 

Covet it, welcome it, channel it .... use the SOB to launch you into new paths. 

It certainly beats the hell out of paralysis. You will be fine and we wish you every success!

That’s always an option, but I’d rather be paid to do it!  I know getting the licenses will be costly up front, but buying an airplane would be far more so over time haha.  What don’t you like about being a pilot?

If you do ever make it down South, take a look at playing the RTJ Golf trail in Alabama.  The best value around and the courses are top notch, very humbling and great scenery.  The Judge at Capital Hill is my favorite, but it's a beast (7813 from the tips).  Check your ego at the pro shop ?.

I’d personally go back and start a career that’s more stable. it’s a highly specialised career so if you lose your medical, fail some training or suffer at the hands of a recession it’s hard to transfer those skills into something later in life and earn similar money. It’s also traditionally quite a journey to work up to a job where you earn significant compensation to balance out the risk. 

I enjoy the flying aspect, don’t get me wrong but like doing anything as a job there’s aspects one doesn’t care for. These include things like circadian rhythm disruption, time away from loved ones, working with idiots, career progression tied to seniority vs skill and so on.

It’s also incredibly mundane (a good thing but also bad). Airline flying is highly structured and procedural. You can fly your personal plane where you want and how you want. Added bonus is you don’t have to sit next to some guy occasionally you wouldn’t wanna have a beer with but yet have to spend the best part of a week with listening to their rants, opinions, racist views and pictures of their vacation home whilst you yourself are on the furlough list about to be unemployed in just over a month.

Thanks for the insight!  Funny, you just described most of the problems with my line of work as well hahahaha.  Maybe private plane would be better after all!
