BJRPorter Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 I have yet to watch the video linked below, it is about surfing in Cuba, and about how it was illegal until recently. https://www.worldsurfleague.com/posts/410624/transformed-ep-1-the-cuba-unknown 1
El Presidente Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Great vid For a number of years, FOH sponsored the "Cubanitas" which was the womens surfing society in Havana. Great times. today, those women are mostly living in different parts of the world and we still stay in touch. They were such a spirited bunch of rebel rousers who fought against constant harassment from the police. Yet again, cuba loses the best of its young people. 4
BJRPorter Posted August 5, 2019 Author Posted August 5, 2019 Amazing! I had a good friend stationed at Gitmo. He wrote a couple of times about the empty line-ups of perfect lefts. Only 100 or so surfers on the whole island? Wow. I have a new mission... 1
Chucko8 Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 Interesting story. Definitely another good reason to get there now
BJRPorter Posted August 6, 2019 Author Posted August 6, 2019 Definitely another very compelling reason to make the trip, but now for even longer and go off the beaten path, Cuban Secret Spots! And, bring a couple of boards to leave behind with the locals.
Derboesekoenig Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 So bring bring surfboards to trade for cigars? Hmmmm
Ryan Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 A friend in Cuba sent me a video of his 7 year old daughter getting her first surfing lesson last month. She looked she was doing a lot better than my two at the surfing lessons. 29 c water temp probably makes it easier than the 13 c here. 1
chris12381 Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 It's definitely something that is done...regardless of its legal status. Kind of like a lot of things in Cuba. ? My photo. January 29, 2020

El Presidente Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 There are some decent surf spots around Havana that work well under the right conditions. Quite a strong little surf community of men and women. Couple of hundred tops. We have had quite a bit to do with them over the years. Beautiful souls. 1
