The Drink: Canchánchara Lux
The Canchánchara is the ancestor of the Cuban Daiquiri & Mojito...I discovered it purely by accident. Daiquiris have always been one of my favorite cocktails for their flavor and simplicity - especially in the winter since one sip immediately takes me back to the beach, regardless of the temperature or amount of snow on the ground. Over time, my home-made daiquiris shifted toward aged rum - what i prefer to drink and keep on hand - and honey syrup (out of white sugar one weekend during a snow storm). Eventually, I discovered that that the combination of rum, lime & honey was a traditional Cuban drink that predates the Daiquiri, which I thought was fitting for a pairing with a nice Cuban Cigar. I've also since added a bit of Luxardo (a key ingredient in the Hemingway Daiquiri) that adds a bit more complexity & depth to the drink but is totally optional if you don't have it handy. My recipe is as follows (note this is probably considered a 'double' but I'm not really a '1 drink kind of guy' so why go through the motions):
  • 1.25 oz lime juice
  • 0.75 oz honey syrup (1:1 honey/water)
  • 0.50 oz Luxardo
  • 3.00 oz aged rum
Directions: Combine ingredients, pour over ice and enjoy. The proper glass for this would be a coupe, but I immediately spill anything in a coupe/martini glass, and so prefer all my cocktails in a rocks glass (honestly, a kids' sippy cup would probably be the best choice for me). I'm sure you could get much fancier and shake/strain/etc, but I just throw it all in a glass and go. I did opt for a wheel of lime since I was going to include a picture

The Cigar: Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchill
Picked up a 3pk of tubos from our host on a whim and was amazed to discover absolutely beautiful, perfectly constructed sticks with thin, oily wrappers - an easy PSP in my mind which I didn't expect. The burn is dead even throughout with a beautifully smooth draw and mild, balanced body with thick, viscous smoke. Draw is smooth throughout. Not great at reviewing cigars yet, but a definite creaminess and some ‘greener’ vegetal flavors coming through. Nice construction, held onto ash for nearly first third (until it fell all over my shirt shortly after taking the picture).

Hope you all had a great weekend!

Sounds like a great drink recipe. Thanks for the suggestion.
