Hey all

Has anyone had any experience with the reserva release? I ask as i have been offered a sealed hoyo monterrey epicure 2 reserva at a good price and I like the normal release! Anyone had a comparison of them? I did see a video on YouTube and it was very helpful. Just wanted to know if anyone rates these as a good release or just a money grab by Habanos

I love the Reservas and Gran Reservas and feel like they are the best versions of their respective marca/vitola.

Are they worth it?  You will get a lot of different opinions on that, but If you are blessed with disposable cash, dispose away.  For me, they are worth it.  If I am in a mood to smoke something special, I pull one out, and it almost always satisfies.

Agreed ^^^^ Everyone will have their own opinion. Obviously if a person decides to spend that much for a Reserva or Gran Reserva, you think it’s worth it, or you are willing to gamble.

I enjoyed the first SW Gran Reserva 2011 that I smoked from my box, it was a very refined and flavorful smoke. Was it worth the exorbitant price tag?  I say yes but that’s just my opinion. Others would undoubtedly disagree.

The ones I've smoked have mostly been worth it, so if you've been offered the Hoyos at a good price point and like the regular ones, it could be a good idea to risk it. Ideally, you could try to obtain one or two singles and give them a try first.

I’ve had several of the H Upmann #2 Reserva and like others have stated, it’s a very refined version of the original, definitely a special cigar experience that’s worth trying at least once IMO.

I usually don’t buy Reservas/Gran Reservas due to the high price tag but I have smoked every single one released and with the notable exception of the RyJ Churchill Reserva which was just awful, they have all been great cigars.

I liked the Epi 2 Reserva so much that I actually coughed up $1k for a box on secondary.

All releases have been superb cigars that I thoroughly enjoyed. . I haven't had a dud one yet and they have been exceptional cigar experiences.

...I have never kept any for myself however :D

They are exceptional cigars and had that cigar last summer.  One of the best cigars I have smoked in recent memory.  Are they worth the price?  Only you can decide.  Price & quality are  not linear in most things

That's it for the price of this box I can get almost 4 boxes of,the regular with a few years age on them or a box of cohiba siglo vi!

My fear is what if a few of them are bad draws? That's a lot of money gone

You could buy the box, start smoking them, and if they dont live up to the price tag for you, sell them on the secondary market (facebook groups) for probably more than you bought them for.

if you can get almost 4 boxes for the price of the RR, i think I know where my money would be going.

unless I had enough money that a consideration like the above isn't actually a consideration :)

Just my opinion based on the two Monte2 GR I’ve had. They had a deeper level of flavor than current Monte2, but equal to Monte2 I smoked in the 1990’s. That is just my palate, or maybe over-romanticized memories of my youth. Either way, I would buy a box of either if the opportunity presented itself today. Current, regular production is great, but a little bland by comparison.

If you’re getting a good price, go for it, and judge for yourself. Enjoy!

and that is exactly what this boils down to every time. sure, you are likely, most occasions, to get a marginally or sometimes considerably better cigar, but the question of value is individual.

i agree with B-Corgi's comments above.

good example, we have just looked at the new release Henschkes. the 14 Hill of Grace is a spectacular wine. brilliant. but it is only a wafer thin edge ahead of this release of the Mt Edelstone. also just so brilliant. but the Hill of Grace is $845 and the Mt Edelstone is $225. so take your pick.

I feel exactly the same way

How does the Cyril compare? I'm quite a fan of both the Mt Edelstone and Cyril.

A note of caution - an I complete box will get a lot less in resale, even on Facebook.

Just did the math - I could have gotten 5.8 boxes of regular Epi 2 or more than 2 50 cabs for the same money :lookaround:

The construction is the best of the best; I would not worry about that part.

@brightonCorgi, I smoked 5 from the box I have, and I am afraid I have to disagree with you. Flavour was great: deep, rich, imo much more flavourful than Regular production, but 2 were plugged and 1 was limit. I do love R and GR, but my Epi2 box is certainly not top

I have had 5 or 6 of these (PSD4, Monte4, Siglo VI, etc.) and yes they were exceptional cigars… If I could afford them I'd have a box of each. If you have the cash don't hesitate, you won't be disappointed!

*I had the great fortune of obtaining a 3 pack sampler of Montecristo No.2 Gran Reservas some years back - and I can't say I was that impressed with them. I was much much MUCH more blown away by regular production Montecristo No. 2's than these. So while I was glad as heck to satisfy my curiosity about the Gran Reservas, I'm still in preference of the regular productions as of this date. I still, when funds allow, will be anxious to sample Cohiba, Partagas, and H. Upmann Gran Reservas some day.
