Chef Posted February 22, 2019 Posted February 22, 2019 I’ve got a box of Fundies here. The aroma is amazing. I salivate. Can’t wait to get into them in a month or so. One thing that’s throwing me off a little, though, is how light the wrapper color is compared to the pictures that I have seen online, including those on 24:24. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind the light hue. But I’m very interested to know what your guys’ experience is with lighter vs. darker shades of wrapper within the same blend. Thanks Mike

Most boxes of Fundies I come accross are on the lighter end of the spectrum. In fact, I don't recall ever seeing a super dark wrapper Fundadore 1

With cigars like Monte Especial, Fundies and Cola a lighter wrapper can equate to wonderfully creamy aromatic smokes. If your wrappers are light, but have good sheen and saturation of colour it's likely they'll be great smokes, and just as good if not better than darker hues. The only thing you want to avoid is a dull looking greyish brownish green wrappers, like you see on Dutch cigars 3

But the pics that I'm comparing to my own show much darker wrappers. And I'm not concerned or anything. I'm mostly wondering how a cigar's flavor profile changes depending on the shade of its wrapper. Our host recently posted a thread and poll showing a couple of boxes of Monte No. 2s, where the wrappers are of stark contrast to one another. It was a very interesting poll. It got me thinking what each of the experiences would be. 2 hours ago, 99call said: Vibrancy of colour is much more important in a way. The wrappers feel pretty oily I guess. So the first picture is mine, taken outside at sunset w/ overcast skies. The other pics are just random ones I found online. 1
JohnS Posted February 22, 2019 Posted February 22, 2019 We had an interesting thread based on some light and dark-wrappered TOS 2017 Por Larranaga Montecarlos not too long ago... 1 1
CaptainQuintero Posted February 23, 2019 Posted February 23, 2019 Yours look great, especially in outside lighting. Remember everything online has to deal with inside lighting, so it's either got filters or simply just not natural sunlight to give that massive white natural light. If you go take pics of your box in different rooms of your house with different lights etc you'll get darker and different shades 1
havanaclub Posted February 23, 2019 Posted February 23, 2019 We had an interesting thread based on some light and dark-wrappered TOS 2017 Por Larranaga Montecarlos not too long ago... Hey John, I haven’t been able to access links. There was one on the minimum humidity thread and now this one. Any ideas why? This is what I see. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Perhaps it's a tapatalk issue? @refresh or @MoeFOH may have some more information on why you wouldn't be able to currently access forum links. 1
HDGSN Posted February 23, 2019 Posted February 23, 2019 One of the best cigars I have ever had: Reynaldo Robusto. Very bright wrapper. 3

Super light but had oily sheen. They were awesome. I also had some super dark punch punches from 05 that were so dark and beautiful, like Maduro. They had all the flavor of a charcoal briquette. The only way to know is to smoke! 2

John, thank you for posting this up. I searched the thread for January 25 and read the comments there. They all made sense. Totally could be my monitor settings, lighting where the pictures were taken, also any filters on the camera, post shot edit, etc. I wasn’t thinking about all these until you guys brought them up. Needless to say, I can’t wait for my own personal experience. 2
aphexafx Posted February 23, 2019 Posted February 23, 2019 I roughly color graded your shot to match the web shot you're comparing it too, in the cigar/band/ribbon areas, using Capture One. All adjustments were global. It's not perfect but it illustrates the point. When exposure, dynamic range, saturation, and color balance are (roughly) matched, both wrappers are in the very same realm, in this case. Both are exposed under a diffused light source, but yours had slightly more contrast. The web shot was darkened or underexposed, which is apparent in the photo whites (ignore the keyed background). In other words, if the web shot wrappers were photographed under your lighting conditions using your exposure, they would look very much like your wrappers, I would think. So there you go. ? ? 3
Chef Posted February 23, 2019 Author Posted February 23, 2019 @aphexafxcool, man! Thanks for going through the effort. That’s great. So I’m still wondering what different shades within the same blend offers. Maybe a lighter vs. darker Fundadores would mirror @JohnS‘s experience with the Montercarlos. 2
Hutch Posted February 23, 2019 Posted February 23, 2019 With very few exceptions, my personal preference is for lighter wrappers...especially on Trinidad, Cohiba, Por Larranaga & Hoyos. 1
