I really hated to give up on the Soligen V cutter pictured above. They are so nicely made. Gotta love that "Made in Western Germany" quality. 

So I whipped out a set of German precision screwdrivers, what else, took it to pieces, and proceeded to sharpen the blade. Got it nice and sharp, I think. Looked nice on a jeweler's loupe, felt edgy to the fingertip.

Reassembled and attempted to cut a soft, fresh RASCC...crushed the @#$! cap!

Out!! You Destroyer of Caps!!!  Into the trashcan...

One point worthy of note is that these old school V cutters pierce the cap with the point of the V, whereas my Colibri cutter leads with the wide opening of the V. The latter method squeezes the tobacco against the sharp blade. The Solingen point pushes tobacco away from the blade and if exploding the cap into pieces to make way for the blade is the path of least resistance, that's exactly what will occur.
