Popular Post Chucko8 Posted January 12, 2019 Popular Post Posted January 12, 2019 Trying out a Bolivar Soberano. This stick was given to me by a friend to try out. Fresh cigar from September 2018. Wrapper is a lovely dark shade looks Maduro esque. Construction feels great and no soft spots when rolling through the fingers. Light it up and got under way. Straight away I’m getting peppery spiciness. It feels full bodied and young from the get go, I’m thinking this may not be so good. There is a need to retouch with the lighter as didn’t seem to take fully. Now it is blazing nicely and the smoke coming off and from it much better and thick. Within 2 more puffs the peppery feels starts to mellow and I detect chocolate cocoa coming through. Things are looking up from the start and the chocolate profile is very prevalent and that cocoa in support. Also now having a toast flavour coming though and the smell of the smoke coming off I can also feel that toast. Pairing this cigar offering with a very nice Colombian blend cold brew coffee. This coffee’s medium acidity and berry profile lends itself nicely with the cigar and all seems to be coming together for a great afternoon. Though my little reviewing companion Frosty didn't believe that the coffee was the best choice for pairing and was urging me toward something with an alcohol content in it. I asked him to wait until next Christmas and keep himself quiet! Well into the 2nd third now and I feel toasted almonds and chocolate. There is a light creamy sweetness underlying here and makes me think that with some age on it that this profile will potentially increase. Construction is on display with the burn keeping relatively clean and the ash holding on right up until the LE band. Final 3rd has definitely becoming much fuller. I had been thinking earlier on in this cigar that the nicotine content didn’t seem as high as I feared it maybe be post the very start of the cigar. Certainly starting to get it now, and truly noted it when I got up to grab a glass of water with a head rush. I’m not able to take this cigar to the nub as it’s just become too strong for me. Final thoughts on this cigar is that for such a young cigar, this is a good smoke. That being said truly believe that this will be great smoke with some age on it to allow the elbows to become more rounded and those flavours to mature. This in my humble opinion has the making of a future chocolate bomb. I’m no expert by any means so unsure of the length of time required to lay them down for though. I will put my mate Frosty aside for about the same amount of time until my next try. If you can get hold of one to try now, give it a go and then try one later down the track to see how they are evolving. 12 1
KavalanWhisky Posted January 12, 2019 Posted January 12, 2019 Great insights, glad you enjoyed the smoke! It was a good afternoon. Would be interesting to see what happens after the Ken 3-5 year resting period ? 1
