Habanos Box Dimensions. A Crowd sourcing initiative. (new Google Sheet link!)

Few years ago I had the feeling of starting a little program to calculate the best way to accommodate all the boxes in the space you have (aka inside your humidor(s)). Had to pass as I completely forgot how to start something like that (long gone my time of engineer). Basically would be a "professional Tetris": Give your humidor dimensions and all the boxes dimensions you have and voilá you will have the optimum way to put them together without wasting any cm.

Maybe someone out there with time and knowledge can do it. Anyone?

I have measurements but they dont look right. I converted inches to cm but my boxes would be tiny compared to what you have listed.

Here goes!

Romeo y Julieta Short Churchill (10 cnt box)

W = 3.2 cm

H = 0.4 cm

L = 2.2 cm

Por Larranaga Monte Carlo (25 cnt box)

W = 2.7 cm

H = 0.5 cm

L = 2.7 cm

Fonseca No. 1 (25 cnt box)

W = 3.6 cm

H = 0.7 cm

L = 2.8 cm

Let me know if I messed up. Seems like I did.

Edit: Just realized...were you only looking for data on the blanks?

Excel would be a lot easier to look at/interpret. Cool idea.

That's the origin of the doc. I copy/pasted it here for ease. Will update the original sheet as more entries come in. :)

I think you messed up. ;) Those #'s are way too low. Measure in inches and then use your calculator conversion function or Google for the conversion. For instance.  "11.5 inches in cm" . Google will pop out the correct conversion.  ?

Gaaaaah, I divided instead of multiplied. I'll update them when I get home, sorry!

This is a great initiative that I was hoping to bump and keep it going!

 Was hoping to get box dimensions for the following:

PLPC 50 cab, RYJ Wide Churchills box of 25 and Monte No.2 box of 25. Thanks!! :)

Montecristo No.2 (25 ct dress box): W=27.4 H=4.9 D=17.1

PLPC 50 cab: W=16.4 H=11.5 D=14.5

The packing problem is not all that trivial an application. It is classified as an NP-hard problem in computational complexity theory. Like many problems like this these days, there is an existing tool, in this case called "BurrTools" that could be adapted. Its designed for solving burr puzzles and also packing puzzles like the Soma Cube.  A clever and powerful application in which you just need to specify the shape and size of each piece and the final size and shape of the container and let it find the solution(s). These solutions can then be animated with a slider in 3D. For burrs (not really relevant to packing puzzles like the Soma cube or a humidor), it can order the solutions by most or least total moves, or the most or least moves for the first piece. For the humidor problem (formally known as the "knapsack problem"), it would need to be adapted to be able to specify a solution ordering based on packing density. Developed by a very clever Russian programmer called Andreas Röver. Its free on SourceForge and the code is available if anyone wants to give it a crack. I would if I had the time and motivation, but alas I don't have either to disappear down that rabbit hole! It would be a bit of work to adapt to make it suitable for easily selecting and identifying cigar boxes, and to allow a finer cell size selection, and also to add packing density as mentioned above, as it is based on puzzle pieces currently. Being a puzzler solver, for packing problems it currently only looks for a solution with 100% packing density, i..e THE solution to the puzzle. The application is currently much more powerful for burr puzzles especially multiple move ("holey") burrs. Would require someone with C++ programming skills, and a good understanding of combinatorial optimization and group theory.

Its not as simple as Tetris. I've programmed Tetris from scratch on a few different platforms myself, but remember, the Tetris game doesn't have a clue about how to optimally play the game. The player does that! The only things in Tetris that are challenging to code for are in reality mostly trivial really, and consist of optimised collision detection, implementing proper "random bag" selection logic for next piece selection, and line completion logic, and none of these are anywhere near as challenging as the packing problem itself.

Glad to see this project is still alive! Is this measurement displayed in inches or cm?

It's in centimetres. Glad to see people sending updates. Which means, I should update the table too!  :D
