Popular Post 99call Posted December 16, 2018 Popular Post Posted December 16, 2018 Hoyo De Monterrey DC 2005? Aroma at cold: Void of anything apart from a slight woodiness 1st 3rd Opening is instantly remanisent of Du Gourmet dried black currants, white woods, and vanilla, although in a very melded subdued package. Almost a slight peach quality present in SLR DC and old Mag 50s. Nice, but I suspect this should of been smoked in 2010, you can see the gaps in the flavour where it’s gone a little papery. 2nd 3rd Heard Ken in a review describe a cigar as ‘cuddly’ and i can see this with this cigar. The profile just rolls on, pleasant but more muted than I would like. 15mins of not much. buttered toast, and getting a little heavier in the woods. The cigar definitely feels like a shadow of what it could of been with fresher aspects lost. Very refined, tiny bit of popcorn and barnyard. 3rd 3rd This is by far my favourite third, you get some idea of the cigar it was, intense vanilla, Lots of dry white wood tannins, drying out the mouth. Popcorn (so often present on older smokes). Really enjoying this finish, bit of burnt mirangue, Fonseca 1 like, but a great deal more heft, and heavy smoke. Last inch is lemony, tannic, salty and bows out with class Conclusion As i’ve mentioned, I think this was, a much better cigar than it is today. Still pretty impressive. Score 90, but I think this was probably capable of 97 about 8yrs ago. 3 2
BJRPorter Posted December 16, 2018 Posted December 16, 2018 Thank you for the review, and reminder that longer aged isn’t always better. 1

Sorry, could you explain? Are you saying this single sentence, should just be the review, and everything else should be deleted?

Your experience and perspective inspired me to remember that there are variables in how age can impact different tobacco blends. Thank you for sharing. 1

There are a few on here that want all cigar reviews to be either "meh" or "ok". Thanks for the input. Yep there are a whole host of blends these days, that have pretty short legs. Cheers 1
RDB Posted December 16, 2018 Posted December 16, 2018 Great review @99call, thanks. Very useful to get persective like this from long-experienced smokers.

Hmmm, many....many more FOH will oodles more experience than me, I (like most on here) just say what I get, whether is BS or not,,, the jury is out. Robs ability to encourage and motivate members to do reviews is great. Seeing everyones different styles and opinions delivers a great resource to all smokers.

I'm probably most experienced in wine, where I've been tasting fairly seriously for about 25 years. But there are people out there who have orders of magnitude more experience than me, and I'm also often struck by people with very little 'formal tasting experience' but excellent palates. Totally agree that it's valuable to see everyone's opinion. However, because I'm now starting to age cigars, I am particularly interested in longer term perspective...
