It was (Obviously) one of the founding principles of the U.S. and is still enforced with some degree of success in parts of the country. The article below is about the State of Michigan passing legislation to make a temporary cigar tax cap permanent. 50 cents a cigar, thats it. Forever. Hopefully......... https://www.cigaraficionado.com/article/michigan-passes-permanent-tax-cap-on-cigars That’s a good sign but a law is only “permanent” until the legislature revokes it.

JR Kipling Posted December 29, 2018 Posted December 29, 2018 Some places in the US have terribly high tobacco taxes. (Its to the point that most pipe tobacco shops have been driven out of business. It’s not quite as bad for cigars.) In the meantime, those same places have shops where they sell marijuana in every city and in most small towns. It’s obvious who has the money and the votes. It’s not cigar smokers, and definitely not pipe smokers. ‘Health concerns’ and what’s fair & right have Nothing to do with the strong arm tactics of those in governments. They never have enough money or control - and they do whatever they can get away with. How many smokers would hit the streets wearing yellow jackets ? Probably not a lot Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro 1

I live in Oregon where Marijuana is legal. It is taxed at a MUCH higher rate than cigars. It is about supply and demand. Despite being HEAVILY taxed, there are just more pot smokers than their are cigar smokers. If there were zero taxes on cigars, there would still be more marijuana smokers than cigar smokers. Same goes for cigarettes.
JR Kipling Posted December 29, 2018 Posted December 29, 2018 In WA state pipe tobacco is taxed at 95% of retail price. As I wrote, it’s not as bad for cigars. Pot smokers are a bigger voting block by far. Yes, they are taxed. But before it was illegal. The overall costs to pot smokers including time, hassles, legal costs, and not being able to partake in what they choose, - has actually gone down considerably for users in states where it has been legalized. hedgeybaby Posted January 3, 2019 Posted January 3, 2019 Coming to a jurisdiction near you soon!! I swear that they test out all of these new rules in Australia before they roll them out to the rest of the world. My ex girlfriend did her PhD in public policy at the LSE and all of her fellow students, regardless of where they came from thought that they knew best on how to control the populace. Once they've completed their doctorates, the students then spread out around the world and infect governmental departments with their thinking on how to make the world a better place. 3

Dimmers Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 Got an emailed alert from a local law firm recently on this. Appears that cigars are exempt from the new regs (for now)... still need a bank loan to afford the duty mind ? https://www.abf.gov.au/help-and-support-subsite/CustomsNotices/2019-13.pdf 1 3
Str8BlkCoffee Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 It is all about people wanting to control what other people do. To make/form the populous into whatever "they" feel is right or appropriate. They want you to feel like you are free and have the liberty to conduct yourself as you like as long as it suits them, anything else and the people need to conform. To save myself from myself. "It is for the children, think of the children!" Those who enjoy freedom and liberty do not like to rock the boat, they just do what they want. It is those whose wish to control others are the one's who are the most vocal and obnoxious. Do what I want because I want what is right (for me). 1
joeruby Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 In a nutshell, you’re free to do as you wish, as long as.. ‘I allow it and under my terms’ = fake freedom !!

But only if you have a single detached home. You could get busted for smoking in your car with the window dwon. If the smoke blows to the cars around you, you could be cited. Crazy. Been the law for 10 years. I used to actually smoke at an outside bar there. Walnut Creek?
