Is there any chance of the Aussie people changing the government and repealing these draconian laws?

Both govt and opposition are in full support of the laws.

all politicians here are spineless.

We are lucky in that it will only affect us in a minor way.  Still, the Govt is our major competitor and source of continued inspiration.  They keep us sharp and ever evolving.

I could say something, but then I'd have to moderate my comments.

Lol, I remember when a pack of Marlboro Reds were $1.80.  I worked at a gas station and used to make money on the side by buying all of the "buy two, get one free" deals, I'd break them down, and sell

Singapore also requires a permit to import tobacco but only if you bring in more than 400g per shipment. If you space out your orders, so that you never have more than 40-50 cigars arriving at any one time, you can still import cigars. But I can see that the Singapore Government may close this loophole eventually as their target is zero smokers amongst the current generation of primary school kids.

Looks like I'll have to empty out my OLH and ship my stock to Singapore before something like this is enacted by the Government; which will be good news for Rob! :p

Read an article about a members only cigar lounge trying to open in Perth. It was met with much resistance and ultimately wasn’t approved.

Seemed that much of the community simply didn’t like the idea of people smoking. Not so much else, complained about smoke smell, but really just wanted to say “no, it’s bad for you”.

Edited to add article link

Most bars/pubs are smoke free, went to my works xmas party last sat, took some cigars but the venue was smoke free if you want to smoke move outside venue to pavement /sidewalk

wont be long before you will not be able to smoke anywhere in public

for example where the Perth crew used to smoke, a Rooftop bar in the city centre you can smoke cigarettes but NO Cigars suffice to say we have moved on to a venue where for the time being we can still smoke

cheers all

There is a city in California that has basically banned smoking everywhere but your own house.  But only if you have a single detached home.  You could get busted for smoking in your car with the window dwon.  If the smoke blows to the cars around you, you could be cited.  Crazy.  Been the law for 10 years.  I used to actually smoke at an outside bar there.

The concept of an indoor smoking lounge is antiquated and has no place in a modern, vibrant city.” That’s the problem here in Perth they think there this but there not ,not by a long shot

Taxes are a virus. Once an industry is taxed into obsolescence a new villain must be found. The next villain will require a greater degree of regulation at an increased tax rate.

This was precisely the conversation I was having with an employee at Corona Cigar Lounge (Dr. Phillips store) in Orlando recently. I was sharing with him how indoor smoking was legislated away a bit over 10 years ago in Australia and it was really important for those US states that allow indoor Cigar Lounges to lobby their local politicians for their right to maintain their business.I feel that I have been fortunate to have experienced smoking cigars indoors on my recent US vacation in Orlando and Dallas (as well as met up with some great FoH members face-to-face for the first time).

I was on a Caribbean cruise prior to visiting the theme parks in Orlando (you know, Disney and Universal) and a number of people smoking on the smoking decks were lamenting the time that you could smoke off your balcony, but this is gone now. It doesn't seem that long ago that you could.

I feel for all of you in Australia, and Canada for that matter. Between taxes and plain packaging,  cigars would be an occasional treat and not an everyday event, as I would not be able to afford it! Hope the US doesn't ever follow suit. Everyone here is up in arms over govt. Putting a warning sticker on box.

So are regulations, as they seem to go hand-in-hand when wanting to ban something. They tax and regulate it to death. It seems as though some in society have gone past the point of dumb to just plain stupid. We really are moving towards the movie Idiocracy, it's sad.

They gotta know they are doing that right? Are they just kicking the can down the road, and hoping the money will not dry up while they get paid.

I’m in California. It’s been over a year since I’ve purchased a cigar in this state. Prices nearly doubled due to taxes. I do business in towns where there is no smoking in public places, indoor or outdoor. We’re desensitized to the proposed regulation and tax bills that we always seem to fighting. I used to have three lounges where my cigar buddies would meet. All three spots went out of business.

Yeah it California is just a huge place for oxymorons. Elitests that cry against firearms and make movies with huge gun battles. Then they say it’s make believe and escapism. Whatever. For such a wonderful state, some real duds are in charge.

Is there anything in the Australian Constitution aimed at preventing unfair taxation? It was (Obviously) one of the founding principles of the U.S. and is still enforced with some degree of success in parts of the country. The article below is about the State of Michigan passing legislation to make a temporary cigar tax cap permanent. 50 cents a cigar, thats it. Forever. Hopefully.........
