They are testing  pizza delivery via drones in Sydney.  Reports are mixed.

I am sorry but what am I missing?

How can we have 50,000 drones on a Friday/Saturday night flying around  a major city dropping off Pizza/KFC/McD

I have no idea how the airspace regulators will permit it.

is this all just another Segway (highly touted and went nowhere) ...or is there real life commercial/retail applications ;)

as long as who ever is making the pie knows how to make it.  love thin crust, brick oven wood fired!

White clam pie with the bellies, a little grated cheese and lemon on the side.  I'd say they could can fly all the drones they want

as long as they get the pizza right.

Get back to me when the drones have a range of say, Brisbane to Minnesota...

Amazon has been experimenting with this for a couple of years now. I'm sure they'll be able to easily work out an arrangement with the FAA.

I've been following the Amazon testing as well.  Seems the approvals process / red tape would be a nightmare on something like that, but if anyone can do it they can.  Curious to hear the scale of the Sydney air-pizza experiment.  I would definitely order it just for the novelty.  Do you tip the drone?  What's protocol here?

I can just see the news about pizzas raining down on people, or worse, a bunch of drones falling out of the sky. Personally, I think it is about as stupid as flying cars. Our technology is not foolproof, and is easily hackable. The skies may be relatively empty, but the ground beneath it is not.

It's good that in “Russia post” it ended so categorically on the first drone, otherwise I would not be able to sleep at night, knowing that my cigars can shatter emoji23.png

It definitely is, trust me. Especially with restrictions on what is considered to be HAZMAT materials and stuff with lithium batteries.

Food delivery service this way sounds great though lol

I don't know about the reality of retail applications, but they're pretty useful on farms or other large acreages, especially if you have  cattle/horses or other fenced critters.

Amazon promised delivery drones in 5 years... 5 years ago.

I too don't see these working out here in nanny state/country.

People can barely use small drones just with their kids at the local park without permits/regulations , imagine the airspace and regulations for such here?

Considering some of the idiots that use drones, I'm quite happy with people requiring permits to use drones. All it takes is one person to fly a drone into some kid's face, and then it will be....

Never used anything like this. Personally I love me some drones but I am not sure they are good for delivery. The weather here is hectic at best and I think that drones would be too cost inefficient for something like that. I have been toying with the idea of buying a drone actually but not for delivery but rather to just use it as a camera. I have been into videos recently and the footage a drone can take is amazing. I have been looking for different models and trying to figure out what would suit e when I came across this really cool blog called buyersimpact.co.uk. I really liked it and when I came across a post about drones I was really impressed. They have a lot of good useful information over there no matter what the topic. I think that if you are looking for decent technical advice this is a good place to start.

We need them now more than ever!

FWIW, my drone has technology that lets it know when aircraft are in the vicinity, and it will not allow me to fly it within the vicinity of the plane, even if I wanted to.  They fly at lower altitude than planes fly, except when the plane is taking off or landing, which is why when the drone gets a certain distance from an airport, it automatically turns around and flies back toward me.

Earlier drones do not have this technology, but I would imagine that these commercial drones would have at least the same technology as my recreational drone.
