Going to Playa del Carmen on Thursday for a wedding. Am I able to pack a torch in a traveling humidor thats placed inside my checked luggage?

What's amount of cigars or rum can I bring back with me? Not sure I'll really be cigar shopping since I get all quality stuff from our host without any problems, but just in case.

I've heard prices are outrageous. The only cigars I'd seek out would be the Mexico/Regionals. Torch should be fine in checked. I've traveled all over the world the last few years and always had my torch in checked. Never had an issue. I've heard horror stories about customs in/out of Mexico, much much more prevalent than any bad Cuba stories. Just don't buy 20 boxes and I'm sure you'll be fine

As @Derboesekoenig said Mexico is not a great cigar tourism location. The tobacco taxes are VERY high and so customs has plenty of motivation to hassle you regarding cigars. Max (I think they still own it) has a nice, but very small LCDH in Playa del Carmen. I would recommend bringing what you want to smoke with you.

You should be fine checking the torch lighter, but again, not one you care about. I've never brought gas, but it seems to me it would be a banned item even in a checked bag. A can of gas is essentially a mini bomb.

Leave the expensive gold Swiss watch at home. Mexico has changed much for the worse, and instead of flying home in a plane seat you could be flying home in an aluminum casket. My2c.

El Pres had about 8 spare lighters with fluid leaving Panama for LAX. The "COPS" (I love how they have that on their official jackets) didn't like them or the cutter. I had the misfortune of (a) going through security after him and (b) sharing the same last name ? .

1 lighter in carry on and 1 checked in shouldn't cause an issue.

I had quite a chuckle at that, seeing all those inserts on top of the x-ray machine. :lol3:

While we were all waiting, one of the cops came over to confiscate a bottle of Coke one dude took in with him. Surprised they didn't pick that up when he went through security... and they also missed the second bottle he pulled out of his bag, after the first one got confiscated. :rotfl:

I’ve had torch lighters, including expensive ones, confiscated (with only a note left indicating my bag was searched).   I lost a memorable and expensive one that way.  Cheapos too.  Id advise against taking any torch lighter that would hurt losing.  Never had a problem with a butane lighter, including carry ons and in pocket.

Torch lighters are not supposed to be in carry on or checked bags. Good chance it would be fine but a chance it could be confiscated and you wouldn’t know until you unpacked. Just don’t take something you’d be afraid to lose.

When I go to Havana I always take an empty one in my checked bag; clearly marked as new/never filled and then I get it filled up there.

Pack  a cheapie that you won't mind losing. Personally I would avoid the hassle and look to source on locally if a lighter is a must. Personally I like to avoid the hassles and go with matches from a local vendor or your hotel. Decent hotels will have cigar matches or at least the small boxes at the front desk or bar area. Not as convenient but it beats getting the third degree from customs.

My 2 cents

Agree, TSA snatched mine on way back from Jamaica..... I bring cedar spills and find matches at destination.

My recent holiday had one rule on the way out and a different rule on the way back.  Same bloody airline!!!

To my understanding and from research with airline rules, I have always seen that ALL TORCH lighters are not allowed in checked or carry on. Might have something to do with the air pressure etc. this I am not sure.
So I just grab a Djeep or bic soft flame lighter and bring it on with my carry on luggage, simple and easy!

TSA took a Xikar Trezo torch from my checked bag a few years ago. Pissed me off, but was the last time I packed a lighter. I check a bag with matches and some cedar when I’m flying.

Officially the TSA doesn’t allow torch lighters in carryon and only in checked luggage if in an approved container. They do allow a standard butane lighter in carryon. I keep a Bic and punch in my carryon for most trips. If you really want a torch, you can bring something like the Soto pocket torch that converts a standard lighter to torch. To be fully compliant you’d probably want that checked vs carryon.

1. No you cannot bring your torch in a travel humidor. Torches are forbidden in checked or carry-on luggage. The only exception is that a torch can be placed in checked luggage if locked in a TSA approved carrying case.

2.  I believe the limit is still $800 duty free for cigars and beyond that, you pay a small percentage of the value of the goods. I’m not sure about the rum.

This...! Really the only time I go with the cedar spills, now doing it feels like vacation and adds a little fun to the trip.
