asmith Posted November 22, 2018 Posted November 22, 2018 Any other chess nerds out there watching the world championship at the moment between Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana? Caruana has the possibility of being the first World Champ from the USA since Fischer. Game 10 has just finished and its pretty tight at 5 all. (feel free to call me a nerd, get it out of your system now!) 1 1

planetary Posted November 22, 2018 Posted November 22, 2018 Yes! I had game 10 on this morning (streaming over YouTube --> Chromecast onto the TV), instead of the usual parade fare. Terrific match! Even someone terrible at the game like me was able to limp along and enjoy the twists and turns in the game. From what I understand, a world championship series starting with 10 draws is unusual? Unprecedented? As an American of Scandinavian descent, it was good to see an American give Carlsen a run for his money! The kids got into it a bit, too. 1

Actually, I'm a massive chess fan, too, but I haven't followed the world championship stuff since Kasparov, Anand, etc. We'll have to bust out the chessboard and a few cigars one day, Smithy!
Cep Posted November 22, 2018 Posted November 22, 2018 Yep 10 draws to start is insane lol What is it only 2 classical games left and if still tied they go into more rapid games to decide it? I love dynasties in sports generally, so i was rooting for Magnus to win. But seems like Caruana can steal this and become champ. Would be nuts!!!
HDGSN Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 I’ve been following along with the Chess24 commentary. Svidler, Grischuk, and Giri have made it fun to see how GMs see lines and to explain out what is going on. I’m hoping Caruana can pull it off, but he will need to do so in the classical games.
oliverdst Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 I tried but I can't understand why they are playing the way they do. I play just for fun, never studied. I understand the first 6 moves. After that is just watching.

LLC Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 I once won a Checkers competition Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

MooseAMuffin Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 I haven't been streaming it, but keeping up with all the post match info. This is the first time I've ever gotten into chess and it's been fun. I really like to watch the YouTube channel, Kingcrusher for his match overviews. I hope Caruana can pull it off and bring it to the States!
MD Puffer Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 Those guys are no joke. One of my classmate from med school was a ranked chess player (500ish in the world years before he went to med school). Russian, Jewish, Brighton Beach. Chess was in his blood. I learned much about chess from him. We roomed together for six months, playing one to three games most nights. Of all those games I won once- and I think it was because he was distracted by the TV. The guy was insanely smart, but that doesn't always translate to "real world" success unfortunately (ie he's not the successful physician one might imagine whereas I've built a pretty successful practice despite being an average but well-rounded student). It seems the penultimate competitors in all things are forgotten by history and often struggle getting situated in normal/everyday life. 1
HDGSN Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Carlsen offered a draw and Fabiano accepted after just 31 moves in Game 12. A knight on each side was the only major piece off of the board. Really unusual draw.
