Islandboy Posted October 27, 2018 Posted October 27, 2018 Excellent timing on the “Something Special Review” weekend - I intended to indulge in something special anyway. I just completed an intense and challenging 10 week commercial resort renovation project, bringing the building back on line as scheduled yesterday. I can finally breathe again. So it was cause for celebration, and to fire up a cigar I’d purchased for this purpose just before the project started. Let me just say that I’m not one who feels that only an expensive cigar can be special. I’ve got several fine CC candidates in my humidor just waiting for my birthday to roll around, that cover the spectrum of cost. But this cigar...this cigar was expensive! $80 expensive. I was on vacation, and all the shiny bits caught my eye, what can I say As one would expect from such a cigar, everything looked flawless about the beautiful silky-smooth wrapper, and it had a wonderful musty barnyard smell to it. And being an NC, the draw was dead perfect despite having a tightly-packed feel. The cigar started out right away with a fine cocoa powder base, and some nice nutty and woody notes. Very much in line with a somewhat aged cigar (I think I read 10 year old tobacco is used). No real sweetness or creaminess about it, just a well-behaved subtlety of balanced flavors. Now the disappointing part. That’s it, that’s the whole review. It had a decadent taste to it the whole way, but was rather uninteresting in that it never changed in flavor. Strength, on the other hand, started out solid medium and was pegging the full meter by the end. Just a few words about the rum in the last pic I had with the second half: Wow, and holy cow. Damn fine rum. Get ya some. Aloha, Brad 3
Derboesekoenig Posted October 27, 2018 Posted October 27, 2018 Hahaha awesome. I'm more interested in the rum. I just cannot will myself to any NCs anymore. I'm willing to try some Opus X variety, and the Davidoff Chef Series caught my eye...but in the end, I'm just not willing to pay the prices for something I will enjoy twice moreover and pay half the price in the Habanos sector. Nonetheless, thanks for the review! I will check out the rum when I get a chance.

I hear you on the NC’s - the majority are either flavorless or overbearing to me. But I can highly recommend the Davidoff Year of the Rooster, if you ever come across one. I picked up a pair at the same B&M in Portland that I got this one at. I smoked one a few weeks ago and it was absolutely fabulous - much better than this Royal Release, and about half the price (which is still freakin expensive, but at least it was that good).
