MC4 Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 Which brand of butane fuel do you use to refill your torch lighters? I use Vector, which is works pretty good, but just wondering what everyone else uses.
teewinot Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 Xikar purofine high altitude butane. Haven’t found anything better 3
NSXCIGAR Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 Whip-It 9x or Newport seems to keep my lighters from building up residue internally. Good value as well. 1
stogieluver Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 Colibri Premium for my cheap lighters. ST DuPont for my DuPont lighter. 2
M777 Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 Vector 14X for my higher end stuff, robinson for my robinson lighters. 1
Lotusguy Posted October 27, 2018 Posted October 27, 2018 Xikar for my torches. DuPont for my duponts. 2
NSXCIGAR Posted October 27, 2018 Posted October 27, 2018 I've found Colibri to be highly clogging for my lighters. Personally, I think it's crap butane at a high price. I've spoken to several lighter repair specialists who agree. I'd avoid at all costs. 2

Fuzz Posted October 27, 2018 Posted October 27, 2018 Been using Newport for over 10 yrs without a hiccup.
unclepauly25 Posted October 27, 2018 Posted October 27, 2018 I really like xikar. Seems to burn so much better than other brands. I think they came out with another version for high performance torch lighters

I've used Colibiri butane exclusively for about 3 years, I haven't had a single lighter stop functioning. All three (a single jet, and two triple jets) burn through tanks of it with no problems. I've heard several times, from several sources that there are only a few (3-4) butane factories on the planet and only 2 sources for the butane it self. 1 factory in Houston, TX and the rest in South Korea. It looks like the biggest difference in "brands" is the label they put on the outside. I couldn't find the article I read a few years ago, but the "Wiki" page for Butane supports the claim it made: "Butane canisters are almost exclusively manufactured in South Korea with the only exception being one manufacturer in Houston, Texas.[13] Butane canisters manufactured in South Korea contain butane from Saudi Arabia, while the American manufacturer fills canisters with domestic butane.[14] 1
Stump89 Posted October 27, 2018 Posted October 27, 2018 This is 1 thing I always go cheap on. I buy whatever my local cigar shop or mega shopping mart has on hand. Generally it's Ronson or Zippo, and not more than $3 a can. They have worked just fine in a variety of lighters. 1

Butane isn't "manufactured" per se, as it occurs naturally. Any LPG refinery can produce butane. I know China produces a lot of butane for their domestic market.
Corylax18 Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 Found it! The article was regarding stove fuel for camping (I use the Red MSR canisters if you're curious) These typically contain a 75/25 butane/propane mix, but the blurb from the article is the most important part; "Taeyang Ind. is the largest portable butane gas cartridge maker in the world, dominating around 70% of global market share as well as 80% of domestic market share as of 2009. Equipped with advanced facilities covering everything from cartridge printing and coating to gas charging, the company exported its butane gas and cartridge more than 50 countries under the brand name 'SUN'. Koreas domestically produced portable butane gas cartridge, now the worlds best, can be used for portable gas stoves and torches. Customized to our clients needs, we produce the best quality products and export it to about 50 countries worldwide, including Japan, the United States, Europe and Southeast Asia. " https://backpackinglight.com/forums/topic/98791/ From Their website: https://taeyangin.en.ec21.com/ Taeyang Industrial Co., Ltd. originates from Seung-Il Can Mfg. Co., which was the first domestic company to produce butane gas in 1961. Through steady product development and popularization over the past 30 years. We have established a long tradition built on high confidence. In 1989, Taeyang Industrial Co., Ltd. began realizing its far-reaching dream to have the world as our market and the human race as our customers. We created a 30,000-pyong factory site in Chonan and operated Fuel lines in 1991 as a start, continuing on to the OEM filling line and 5-gallon can line in 1992 and the printing and painting lines from 1993. Thus we have accomplished every aspect of a consolidated Tin Can company with international size and the latest facilities, equipped to deal with processes from printing and Tin Cans to fully automatic filling. Aside from covering the domestic market, we are also exporting our products to approximately 40 foreign countries including Japan, the U.S. and Taiwan. Additionally, we won the 10-million-dollar Export Tower in 1996, and attained a Quality Certificate from the JIA (Japan) and the ISO-9002 Certificate from Tuv Rheiland (Germany) in 1995, before moving on to capture the Single PPM Quality Certificate and UL Mark Certificate in 1997. These initiatives are made in order to produce high-quality products that will satisfy our customers' needs, as we mature into the world`s best butane gas fuel company both in name and reality. Currently, we are doing our best to provide the best products and services with safety and reliability as our utmost priorities Notice their "long list" of capabilities does not include butane or propane refining, just cartridge manufacturing, printing/coating and charging. 5 hours ago, Fuzz said: I don't know how far I'd trust Wikipedia. I hear that, I was referring more to the manufacture of the commercially available canisters of butane. Both for lighter refills and camping stoves. I understand that Butane and Isobutane are produced and used in the blending of other fuels all over the world. I'll see you in about 2 weeks. Haha

Deeg Posted June 9, 2019 Posted June 9, 2019 Sorry to revive an old thread, but didn't see a point in starting a new one. Anybody ever use Neon butane (it comes in 5X, 7X and 11X refined, ROFL)? Being in Japan my options for something that won't cost an assload to get shipped to me are a little limited. I was a Lava guy in the old days but that's long gone. I can find Purofine here but that's like $20 for a tiny 1.9 oz. can.
