Ken Gargett Posted August 6, 2018 Posted August 6, 2018 was watching an old hitchcock recently - Topaz. certainly not his best. partly set in cuba. but there are several scenes where people are smoking cigars and almost every time, they are, quite seriously, frog green. so, they were what i understand to be candela cigars. i've only ever seen a few - i suspect others would be far more familiar and love some thoughts. our dear friend hamlet very kindly gave me one he had rolled quite a few years ago. it is still in the humidor so might be time to pull it out. it is quite obviously green. my understanding is that this is achieved by somehow locking in the photosynthesis/chlorophyll in the wrapper giving that colour. i also read something about them on a site, suggesting that of the billions of cigars smoked in the states from the late 50s to the early 70s, most of them were candelas. no idea why. but that would fit with the timing of this movie. anyone more familiar?
TheLiquidGator Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 My dad smoked Garcia y Vega candela cigars for many years. These were not the current panetela's commonly sold now. They were more like lonsdales. He always had a cigar in his hand and lived to 89.
dicko Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 Would they taste any different? I've seen some greenish looking cohibas thats my only experience.Sent from my SM-G965F using Tapatalk
rcarlson Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 I had several years ago and can't remember the maker. They were good though. No rich flavors but interesting.
retrofail Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 Fuente and Illisione still make quite excellent candellas. Different profile for sure, and I can't say it would be a go to stick for me everyday. Every generation has their preferences. Current jawbreakers for example.
BrightonCorgi Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 Have tried PL DC's from around the Revolution, but those are heck old cigars. I too would like to see some Candela's released by Habanos. Nostalgia can sell well.

I read that somewhere too so I assumed candelas were an old, old style of cigar, but apparently they were only really available from the 1950s on—so kind of a fad I guess.
Coloniales Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 I have some Partagas Parisianos from the 60's, these are Candela. I have smoked some Fuente Candelas (awful, but cheap), and the best recently were Illusiones. I remember back in the day, Hanibal on the A Team always had a green cigar on the go. They are regarded as "Mild", and do have a certain flavour. Just a fashion or fad, that lasted quite a while. i remember seeing Hirochi Robiana smoking a Candela Wrappered Salamone 7 or 8 years back, and I think Habanos did toy for a while of doing limited releases, but nothing came of it. Keith.
fastkiller13 Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 I really don’t like the flavor of a candela wrapper. They’re plenty of NC which are made with Candella wrappers. A trend I have seen lately is a barber pole cigar. There are two wrappers the candella and a standard wrapper. I may have a few buried in my humidor. If so I’ll throw up a pic later on.
cigaraholic Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 Sadly I’m old enough to have smoked many candela cigars....back in 1970 they were still around. I enjoyed them very much...there was a lovely sweetness to the wrapper that I enjoyed. A very nice morning cigar for me. It’s funny I’m having a margarita with a Picadores right now and the combination of the two leaves my mouth with the flavor of a candela wrapper....the citrus from the lime and sweetness from the Cointreau with the tobacco are very close.....I do not put salt on my glass.
THEMISCHMAN Posted August 8, 2018 Posted August 8, 2018 I’m not a big candela fan but the RoMa Craft Fomorian is one I do enjoy occasionally. It’s a fat cigar but the Cromagnon blend and the candela wrapper work well together.
