Every now and again my wife joins me for a puff. Because she’s not a regular, I give her mild smokes, and she’s generally enjoyed and been absolutely fine with them. However, twice now I’ve given her a Por Larranaga Panatela and she’s been spectacularly sick. Any idea why just that one cigar should give her such a violent reaction? I’m stumped.

*GOD, I wish more would!!!  The ONLY cigar that made me, well - pleasantly "sick" was E.P. Carrillo's LaGloria Cubana from 1993 when made in Miami. Now THAT mama jama made me have to go lie down! THAT'S what I want in a cigar - strength, raw power, naked and merciless! When I had the chance to meet the great Mr. Carrillo when he came through Jeffersonville, Indiana's Riverside Cigar shop, he said the current day cigar of his that is close what I want is The Inch.

Oh - but as far as your question about what should cause such a reaction sometimes with occasional cigar smokers...unnhuuhunh?  My co-worker in Atlanta gave the Cohiba I gave him to a girl friend to try.  He said soon she was swooning back and forth, her eyes going up into her head so he only saw the whites of her eyes...in other words it made her very woozy. A little too strong for her. I'm sure some medical expert somewhere might be able to explain better...

Possibly not the cigar, but her. Had she not eaten recently? Low blood sugar can be a killer if you try to smoke a cigar. A sugary drink always helps (Rum in my case!) just a thought.

Nicaraguan cigars can put me on my ass...  Too strong for me.  Taste nice, but not looking for a flight.

As far as current production... Few cigars have much, if any, nic effect on me.

BBFs pack that punch. I've had to lay one down at the halfway mark. Kicked my arse! Empty stomach too which couldn't have helped.

Ramón Alloñes Jubilee AP Regional... Started this off like it wasn't a big deal. Half inch into it, the thing dialed up to 20/10. Got the pins and needles all over my skin and the cold sweats. Had to grab a sweet drink to settle things down.

My buddy and I just smoked ED Conde Beli's and he got a nic buzz. Didn't put any kind of dent on me. But in the summer I've been smoking about 2 sticks a day.

It’s just that she’s been fine with every other cigar I’ve given her - most larger

Has she perhaps been smoking cigarettes in her earlier life? In particular in smaller, cig-like formats some ex-smokers tend to fall back into their former habit of inhaling, at least to a part. Also, people not used to cigars tend to smoke small, slender cigars quicker than larger formats. Make her take her time and smoke slowly. Also, don't give her freshies since residual ammonia can worsen the effect. And finally, as you say, she's smoking infrequently, so her sickness may also depend on the smoking intervals. (longer than about three weeks and your nic-tolerance is back to zero)

Finally - don't take "mild" from Habanos standards for necessarily "low in nicotine". For me, one of the striking examples here is the ERDM CS - a pretty mild cigar with a usually comparatively large nic load.

I've gotten the whirlys a few times before, but the only stick that has made me physically ill was a Rocky Patel Edge Corojo. Both may father (who has smoked for decades) and myself were both green and nauseous about an inch into the stick, which also had a very odd flavor to boot. I dont know if it was nicotine or just bad tobacco, but it was the final nail in the "RP" coffin for me. I had never before and have never since felt that ill from a cigar. Maybe its just an adverse reaction for one person to a certain cigar. Who knows.

I had this happen about 10 years ago or so with the Rocky Patel Sungrown. I was still smoking plenty of strong Nicaraguans at the time (obviously), so I doubted that it was the nicotine. I even aged one for several years and tried it only to have the same effect. Threw the last couple in the firepit and swore off RP products until Hamlet blended that blend for him. Actually, I still haven't technically smoked that one... been concerned about the RP funk.

Your wife has an expensive palate.

She couldn’t handle the bit of **** they include in the PLP’s as these aren’t top tier Cubans, they’re the lesser ‘tripa cortas’.

Be a good gent and hand her that vintage Cohiba Coronas Especiales
