Best petit corona to smoke young

Recommended Posts

I'm smoking a monte 2 with 2 years that has approximately hit the 30 day acclimatization period. Its really wonderful! However, I really like the idea of a 45 min smoke, and I also like the price point on petit coronas. Being the newbie I am, I do not have much stock yet, and would like some suggestions on petit coronas that I could smoke right off the bat.

Will be following this. Love Petit Coronas...

HUPC - have some with 3 years on them. They smoke just fine, you can start to taste the beginnings of that Upmann sweet creaminess. It would be great if they end up getting there.

Bolivar PC - have some with 2 years on them. Only smoked a couple, feels like they aren’t all that refined yet but, again, I enjoy the way they are smoking. Would be nice to see if they smooth out in another year or two.

MC #4 - have some with 1 year on them and I really enjoy them. Heavy on the cocoa. Don’t know how much better they can get.

I’d like to see a follow up thread talking about your experiences with long term aging (5+ years) of PC’s!

If I had to choose one I would say Monte 4 maybe. It is not my favourite. They are all good young though, but also all benefit from some time down. Try a sampler and see what you like because you are going to get all kinds of opinions here that are about as inconsistent as ... well Cuban cigars. :D

I really love PLPCs with some age to mellow them out. And I find wrappers of a lighter shade to be where it’s at for them. My experience anyway.

I'm a fan of the Upmann PC, great on price and big on flavor.

Discontinued. Good luck finding some boxes.

Just cracked the first from a HQ box of Monte4 - MOB JUL15 - last night. Absolutely superb. Perfect example of a Monte4. Creamy, deep cocoa, coffee, screams Montecristo. However, this was not ROTT or anything close, as I have patiently rested this box waiting for it to hit the 3 year mark. Prefer most monte's at 3 years+, the exception being MC2 which I prefer 5+ years. It's not too hard to find MC4 with a few years on them already if you want something to smoke straight away.

As for smoking young, I know they are not PC's, but for a perla/minuto, I can happily smoke Partagas Shorts or San Cristobal El Principe young, old, straight off the rollers table. Like them all ways ;-) I still do think even these are better with at least 2 years on them, but for me, that is not a hard and fast criteria, as I like the mongrel in the younger ones too.

"Young" being less than 2 years I suppose, I'd say almost all of the current PC offerings (HUPC included) are very smokeable. I can't think of any that really more than 2 years to be very good, when they are good of course. Typically Cohiba performs better with time, but I had a NOV 16 Siglo II early this year that was just stellar.

I guess I'd have to say the PLPC is probably the only PC that might be a bit hampered with less. Many like them young, but those rounded caramel flavors really take a few years to come on strong with them.
