smokeeater901 Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 Since I am fairly new to the CC world I was curious what the deal is with dipping the cigar into honey before lighting it. I saw this video and it really made me curious. Can someone enlighten me.
Popular Post SigmundChurchill Posted April 14, 2018 Popular Post Posted April 14, 2018 I cant watch the video now, because I am at work, but my philosophy is that you dont dip a good cigar in anything. I cringe when I see people do that. Think of it like a good, dry aged steak. If a steak is good, it doesnt need steak sauce, or God forbid, ketchup. It is perfect the way it is cooked, and why would you want to mess with perfection? The sauce would actually MASK the perfection and make it less perfect. You dont add sugar to a great Bordeaux. Same with a good cigar. It was made with a recipe in order for it to taste the way it tastes. The way it is SUPPOSED to taste. Why would you want to change that by adding something that doesnt belong? 5 2
canadianbeaver Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 Not watching, as botl above. But we do have a use for the tiniest bit of honey with our cc’s, take it or leave it. We do not have glue for our cigars. If the wrapper should have an issue, particularly near the band but anywhere really, I take the tiniest bit of honey or equivalent and stick it down. CB 1
Colt45 Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 It's simply a flavoring agent - I assume to sweeten the taste a bit. I had a friend who would pour a little rum into a tube, and keep a cigar like that until he was ready to smoke it. I can also recall reading here somewhere of keeping a small container of rum or some spirit in a humidor. I wouldn't do any of it myself, but to each their own. The thing that caught my attention was Mr. Garcia saying "multi puffing" was necessary for proper combustion. Personally, I find that to be an issue of / with construction. We often talk about taking deliberate draws, keeping the cigar cool, etc.... P.S. We often discuss complimentary pairings - usually beverages with cigars. Would it be different if they'd ate a bit of honey on bread while smoking?
dealsrme Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 I only ever encountered this in Pinar del Rio and the way they tell it is that it’s a “natural filter” while smoking the cigar. Make of that what you will. I, like those above me, do not see the point in messing with a great thing. If it’s great, of course. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Smallclub Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 Before I watch the video, I can say this: in Cuba, Spain a few other countries there is an age old tradition of dipping a cigar in coffee or liquor. When I was a teenager I have often seen people plunging the foot of a churchill into their glass of cognac; I also remember old gentlemen at The Tenerife Yacht Club (Spain), plunging their cigar into their cup of black coffee. It sounds very old fashioned but at that time this practice shocked nobody… 1 1
smokeeater901 Posted April 14, 2018 Author Posted April 14, 2018 Thanks everyone, that did seem a little weird to me so I am glad I was not the only one that thought you shouldn't be doing that LOL.
canadianbeaver Posted April 15, 2018 Posted April 15, 2018 Pardon my question, but if you dip your cigar in anything, or put liquid on it, how can it light up or stay lit? Just askin’. CB
JohnS Posted April 15, 2018 Posted April 15, 2018 Cigars dipped in honey? Yes, it's something I've come across before, but not personally though...

In the video, the head was dipped, not the foot, so ignition was not in question. As to my friend "soaking" cigars in tubes, it's been a while, but I can't recall there being an issue with lighting or burning. 1
luckme10 Posted April 15, 2018 Posted April 15, 2018 I too, have only seen this done in Pinar del Rio. But I think it's because they're trying to sell cigars to the tourists and it makes it easier on the uninitiated palate. 1
