Guest mr. snappy Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 If you like the ******* Brew era Miles, definitely try The Cellar Door Sessions (6 CD Set) -- I think it's incredible -- or, to save a little money, Live-Evil. The In A Silent Way sessions are also great and the Jack Johnson set is good, but can get tedious. Also, if you like the more electric Miles, I'd be surprised if you didn't like vintage Dead ('68 - '72), such as: Fillmore West 1969 (3 or 10 CD set); ****'s Picks 4, 16, 22, and 35; "Skull and Roses"; and Europe '72 Some newer stuff I've been listening to: SFJAZZ Collective - pretty new but off to a great start. Limited edition, extended CDs are available at www.sfjazz.org, or the general commercial releases are available at amazon, etc. Highly recommended. Also... Greg Osby - Channel Three (Inner Circle is also a must-own); Michael Galasso - High Lines; Arild Andersen - Electra; Paul Motian - Garden of Eden; Bill Frissell - East/West; Dave Douglas - Keystone; Tomasz Stanko - Suspended Night; Vintage (omitting the more obvious classics): I like nearly everything by Charlie Haden, but two must-owns are "Nocturne" and "In Montreal" (the latter with Egberto Gismonti, who is amazing) Nils Petter Molvaer - Khmer Greg Osby - everything else he's done Jason Moran - Black Stars and Facing Left Charles Lloyd - Hyperion with Higgins I also love nearly everything by Coltrane, but Live at the Village Vanguard (4 CD set) is my favorite And a couple of sleepers (not jazz): Neko Case - Blacklisted (gorgeous, sometimes haunting, voice; great music); and Sparklehorse - It's a Wonderful Life (strangely beautiful and very original) One classical CD everyone should own: Zehetmair Quartet - Schumann String Quartets 1 and 3 (ECM). I could talk about music forever (my favorites are jazz, rock, and classical). Perhaps we should have a sub-forum devoted to music and music reviews, etc. And by the way, I'm a relatively new member and this is my first post.

anacostiakat Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 Right now? Classic Jazz - Lee Morgan. I listen to all kinds of stuff though depending on my mood.
