had just put on that new dylan compilation - 'no direction home' - just before logging in. it is the new-ish double cd (no 7 in the bootleg series). if not dylan, springsteen (endlessly and have nothing else in the car). lot of cuban stuff - absolute favourite is the afro-cuban all stars and 'a toda cuba le gusta'. its on next. spent ages trying to track down their 'live in japan'. nearly as good and with dvd (if only i could work those things).

then neil young (the good stuff), stones, occasionally leonard cohen, jackson browne, mellencamp and zevon.

lot of sixties compilations and also a bit of frank, dean etc.

lisa - i'm also a fan of nina simone. long thought her 'my way' was the best version of all.

i should add that if he neighbours get too annoying (or i want guests to go), on comes billy ray cyrus and 'achy breaky heart' (on a loop). works every time.

that said, i have a bootleg springsteen concert where he plays a chunk of it and claims it a good song (weird).

as rob is still on holidays, he has asked me to reply for him.

showtunes!! big time. loves 'em. cats, les mis, phantom. rogers and hammerstein (rogers hammering anyone and hammerstein rogering the rest). you name it, he sings along. bit of gloria gaynor. loves a rare aussie cover cd called 'to hal and bacharach'.

as he headed off for hols, i could have sworn i heard the whole family singing along to 'its raining men'.

i think it all has something to do with rob's days as the construction worker in the village people.

» Is it me or does Bob Marley and a cigar go hand and hand!!! :-D

for me, marley and russian roulette with all barrels loaded. i know that might be sacrilege but a long time ago, i spent the best part of a year in the back of a truck with 18 others travelling. we bought an old tape player and shared tapes. except, wonderful people they were (for the most part), they all disliked springsteen so i got to play my tape just three times in 8 months (serious withdrawal - but i will never forget one time - in the middle of the sahara on a freezing, cloudless night with a mega-million stars all beaming and bruce blasting across the desert. magic).

on the other hand, they loved bob marley (tho we only had one tape) and whitney houston.

i still cannot hear either without going just a touch postal.

I've seen the Tea Party the last two times they've been out and love them to death. Such a shame that they've broken up :crying: was a sad sad day for me.

I'd also love to see The John Mayer Trio...hope they come out.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra live bootlegs from the 2005 tour have been seeing heavy rotation lately. Other than that, mostly Mark Knopfler, and a jazz/blues/rock outfit from PA - O'2L.

saw mark knopfler backing eric clapton (with phil collins on drums) at the royal albert hall in the late '80s. brilliant night. disappointed that rob has received no support for his love of musicals.

Musicals?????

Hard to take seriously a man who thinks Springsteen is God incarnate.

....Come down to the humidor any given Friday afternoon and listen to Lisa and Myself belt out Chicago's "If you leave me now"

Certainly moves Smithy :lol2:

Posted

dear village idiot, sorry village person,

it moves smithy because he is pleading for it to come true.

now - you can post whatever evil concocted photos of me on the web that you like. you can bag me endlessly and you can even snipe away (typical tall poppy syndrome) from down below at the skins BUT under no circumstances for any reason whatsoever (okay, may be the john kerry thing was a bit ott) can you bag bruce.

any more of that nonsense and it will be magnums at dawn (or at a far more reasonable hour when i have arisen). it is unacceptable.

My apologies Ken

Hard to knock someone who writes lyrics like

“We're a long, long way from home. Home's a long, long way from us.”

what can you possibly expect when you take things out of context. i believe that you are referring to the much-lauded 'devils and dust' and that the correct gems are -

"I got my finger on the trigger

But I don't know who to trust

When I look into your eyes

There's just devils and dust

We're a long, long way from home, Bobbie

Home's a long, long way from us

I feel a dirty wind blowing

Devils and dust"

the man is the shakespeare of our time (tho may have to share that with bob).

Mary had a little lamb

It's feet were white as snow

Everywhere that Mary went

The lamb was sure to go

Notice how Bruce uses the same pattern :-D

dragon, you are of course correct. i'm just trying to do my bit and make him a better person (which would lead us to another of his favourite songs - the impossible dream').
