dvickery Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 Bought this album about 6 months after release , in the 99 cent bin (maybe summer of ‘72) . At the time I remember thinking it was pretty awesome . derrek 2
hoyopr Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 Slide Guitar Sonny Landreth, Yes I know most are saying who, this guy is damn good at what he does. 1
smokin.joe Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 Three guitarist that are often overlooked are: Robin Trower Ronnie Montrose Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) They have a unique sound and technique that set them apart in my opinion. I have see the first two live several times. Amazing. I would also say that Alvin Lee from Ten Years After and Kim Simmonds from Savoy Brown are top guitarists.
gweilgi Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 Another blast from the past under-rated name, especially if you like Blues: Peter Green. If not for his mental health troubles, he would probably have eclipsed Clapton ... easily. 1

joeypots Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 Who's best is a question that can't be answered. Who do I love, lot's and lots. I have a soft spot for Mick Taylor and Gerry Garcia.
joeman Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 So hard to name just one. Underrated has to go to Alex Lifeson of Rush Most influential has to go to Clapton, Hendrix, Van Halen Guitarist/Craftsman sort of place has to go to Eric Johnson, Mark Knopfler, Best rhythm guitarist - James Hetfield, Malcolm Young so many titles you can make up, so many great guitarists

And that's clearly Jimmy Page for "Stairway to Heaven" and Ritchie Blackmore for "Smoke on the Water"! How many garage band axemen have started their careers fingering out those riffs? 1
grizzlee Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 Let the debate begin...... In 2004 Guitar World put together a reader’s poll to compile a list of the 100 greatest guitar solos of all time. There has been a lot of great music since that time and I'm pretty sure there will be much debate but the topic is a sight better than debating politics. BuzzArd Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 Not sure if the intent of the thread has been maintained.... but at the risk of getting further off the intended direction and just simply naming amazing guitarists I'll pipe up again (for the last time). I was introduced to Greg Koch's music at the Fender booth during the 2009 NAMM Anaheim convention. He is Fender's #1 clinician. The guys is quite amazing, and absolutely hysterical. Here's some older footage of some fun stuff he does. Definitely quirky and phenomenally talented. His ridiculous hand size is a totally unfair advantage IMO.... 1

And between the Grateful Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band, I have seen him play over 100 times, and it still wasn’t enough. I once saw him play at a little bar in town, in what was the oddest trio I could imagine, of Garcia, Sammy Hagar, and Elvis Costello, but it worked. He was so versatile, he could play with anyone. All those JGB shows at the Warfield were some of the greatest times of my life. He played Dylan, The Band, gospel, folk music, bluegrass, R and B, etc, etc, etc. He would take the most eclectic list of songs and make them his own. And I think some of his best work was when he was playing bluegrass with David Grisman. You mean like this? 1
Hammer Smokin' Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 All that has been talked about in this thread is electric guitar players. What about those who slap 'da bass. I'll start with my favourite living bassist - the best bassist I've ever seen live. Victor Lemonte Wooten
dtrott Posted March 29, 2018 Posted March 29, 2018 There are too many to name put..... Mark Knopfler's got such a unique style. I've seen him with Dire Straits and when he was touring solo. That guy IMHO is simply amazing. Also ,for pure rock, nobody could do it like Jimmy Page." Physical Graffiti " which was released over 40 years ago is Page at his absolute best .

John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) Geddy Lee (Rush) And damn right, they are under-rated and over-looked far too often.
