Advice on moving to Singapore?

Recommended Posts

I could really use some advice...

My company has asked my family and me to make a permanent move from NYC to Singapore in the next few months. We plan to keep a house in the U.S. in order to visit family twice a year, but with three small children, it's hard to know how often we will be back.

I am in need of advice on what to do with my existing CC stock when we make the move. If you have experience with this, could I trouble you to shoot me a quick PM?

Also, I'd love to buy you a beer if you feel like meeting up once we arrive in SG. Please feel free to introduce yourself  :buddies:

Not experienced with moving to Singapore but can say from traveling there, they're pretty strict on tobacco and customs duties could be prohibitive.

To be specific:

24021000 Cigars, cheroots & cigarillos, containing tobacco Nil $427.00 per kgm

Smoke them and purchase new cigars once you get to Singapore, this is what I did before moving to Taiwan.

How many cigars are you planning to bring?  Perhaps they can be imported for a fee from one of the cigar vendors there?  The tax per KG is not high considering how light cigars are.  Shouldn't your employer be fronting your moving costs?  I worked in Singapore for a good month or so once and visited for work on other occasions.  Great place to work, but they really work you there compared to the US.  Missing the food in Singapore big time!!!

Hey. You get a duty free allowance of 1 cigar.

Also without a license you can then only bring in up to 400g worth of cigars to actually pay duty on. If you want to do this option, download the customs@sg app and just complete the self declaration and pay on the app.

If if you have more than 400g to bring with you. I will try and find the list of companies that can get you a license. Will PM you, The customs office gave me the list and you should be able to get it sorted through one of these companies before you arrivr.

  • Thanks 1
