Price sensitivity

Are you conscious of the cost of a cigar before smoking it?  Do you save spendier cigars for special occasions?  Or if it’s in the humidor, it’s fair game.

Don't think about it at all.  Once it has been purchased, I don't think about the cost ever again.

Same thing with casino chips...

It would take away from the experience.

Definitely something I consider, but for me it's more about what I'm in the mood for. Although there are certainly some that are pricey and/or rare enough that I'll wait for a special occasion or share with a buddy who will appreciate.

I do keep price in mind on some cigars.  I guess it's more like "price and can I get another box" sensitivity.  If it's not a regular rotation cigar for me, the years tick on and now it's worth a few bucks...  I may not be so quick to just break open the box and smoke one.  Should I sell or trade them for something I am more apt to smoke now since they are worth more than when I originally bought them?  I don't have a large cabinet, but boxes can languish untouched a good decade.

I keep an eye out on price when I smoke. Depending on the weather, how much time and attention I can spend on a cigar will factor into my selection. If I'm unsure of anything, I'll grab something I'm ok with putting down early. 

Currently I'm trying to smoke through all my NCs while stocking up on CCs to age. I put, what I consider anyway, the more expensive boxes at the bottom of my aging tupperdoor. Same goes for the singles. I also tend to select NCs over CCs if I feel unsure about the weather, my time and my focus.

Never, once bought it's a 100% write off, that goes for cigars, wine, shampoo and even cars

I think about cost when it correlates to how easily I can get my hands on more. Since cost often equates to rarity for me, I want to be sure I can give my full attention to those cigars. With less expensive cigars I don’t worry as much about having them interrupted.

I’m a working man, not independently wealthy by most measures. But with cigars, as with my mountain bike and all of the other finer things in life that I enjoy, I don’t allow cost to be a primary decision-making factor. Quality in life is a priority for me, and at 56, YOLO rules.

I worry less about the cost and more about how many I have and can I still get them. The much older or no longer available cigars are the ones I’ll have when I’m looking for something for an occasion.

Not at all. Once I bought it I will smoke it whenever in the mood. It has nothing to do with its price...

Ability to replenish is what drives any hesitancy when I reach for a smoke, could care less about cost. But, often times there IS an inverse relationship between cost and availability.

This is my approach as well.

I smoke far less than I used to, so what I'm in the mood for has much more to do with what I choose than what I paid.

I am not price sensitive -- I will smoke whatever the mood and the occasion warrants.

I am, however, rarity-sensitive: the last few out of a favourite box, or aged stuff, or a few otherwise unobtainable singles I do try to keep for special occasions.

It seems I'm the same as a few others. Sensitive at time of purchase but after that I go by pure smoking preference. So I might have a Sir Winnie on a random work night or a partagas short on my birthday to celebrate if that's what takes me.

Cigars are so expensive in this country that you would go crazy if you were conscious of the cost.  

I'll typically hold onto the rarer cigars (which admittedly are typically more expensive) for something a little more special, but even then I'll skip them if I don't have the time or inclination to give them the attention they deserve.

If I hear the siren song of a particular cigar, I just smoke it.  However, many nights when I don't hear a particular stick calling me, I'm sure to reach for something out of  the $100 and below boxes.

Couldn’t agree more. All the cigars i buy are relatively in the same price point so really i just choose by mood.

Everytime. Because our Oz gov can't manage their budget and tobacco tax is easy. 

It just means that you really ensure you can enjoy that special one that has been put away.

I wouldn't say it's completely unrelated, mostly it is. But value and cost are different things. It is more about the value to me personally. As such that may or may not be related to price at time of purchase. A special cigar for a special occasion can be that perfectly aged and/or discontinued cigar of known quality and provenance, and perhaps sparsity (that is, like previous posters have said, the difficulty for me personally to restock when there are only a precious few left). This can be a "simple" MdO2, a Boli Inmensas or CE, a Party Connie 3 or even an unassuming PC of some sort, which had all cost me less than six to ten bucks at time of buying... or a Gran Reserva. Similar value to me, but different cost. So, basically, yes, I do select special cigars for special occasions (who wouldn't...?) while they aren't reserved to it. But cost doesn't get much into the equation. If at all so, it's only coming with it as a secondary effect.

When picking out a cigar to smoke from my stock the thought of price NEVER crosses my mind.

I guess there might be times during or after smoking a cigar that I think about price. If it was a more expensive cigar I may decide if I thought it was worth the price or not. Like that $20 Davidoff I smoked the other day. The price never crossed my mind when deciding to purchase it but I certainly thought about it during and after. The conclusion was that I have a bunch of $5 to $8 smokes that are just as good or better. lol

Price paid and how much I will enjoy the cigar are unrelated.  I've paid a huge premium for cigars that are just meh and I've gotten some amazing ones dirt cheap.  I tend to organize my cigars and smoke based on the flavor profile I want at the time, I don't really consider price and the special ones are special for the way they taste and perform, not what they cost.
