I had an email earlier today that I need to get your input/experience on.

"I have run into a problem having a cigar in the late afternoon into the evening. I can't sleep. I just lay awake for hours. The strange thing is that it wasn't always the case but the last 6 months having a cigar after 4pm is like drinking a couple of gallons of Red Bull.  Have you heard of this before? Are there others like me? Is there a cure to this nightmare? "

Over to you fine folks

"...is like drinking a couple of gallons of Red Bull."

....then don't have a Red Bull with your cigar... :D

No, not observed so far.

Nope. I'm not a great sleeper but have never had this. All of my weekday smoking is after 4pm.

I've had this happen before. It doesn't consistently happen though. It seems to have lessened in the last year. Prior to that it was happening more and more.

No, haven't had that ever happen to me.

I've had this with larger gauge cigars. It's seems like the nicotine buzz gets thoughts racing some times. I've had a similar experience smoking shisha on stop overs in the ME.

I've never experienced this before. All of my cigar smoking lately has been late at night after the wife turns in for the evening, and smoking a good cigar is usually the last thing I do before hitting the sack. I don't drink, so cigars are my "nightcap" or closure to the day.

99% of my cigar time is at night after my son is put to bed and I've had dinner with the wife. I know I am sensitive to caffeine, nicotine does not seem to have any effect to my sleep as far as I am aware. Even on those 2 or 3 cigar evenings :)

I have cigars late at night to help me immediately pass out until the morning. I've never had problem sleeping after a cigar

I have a feeling this has to do with blood pressure. Cigars make it go up which can cause your heart rate to increase. Lying in bed with your heart racing can certainly keep you awake.

Never had this happen but I am also 30 years old and involved in a highly stressed job.  Maybe it's the anxiety waiting for the 24 to be posted :)

I smoke almost exclusively in the evening...never had insomnia. But...I have noticed that I have pretty edgy almost nightmarish dreams if I’ve had a few cigars before bed. One cigar doesn’t usually do it, but more than one seems to bring this on. Before cigars, my dreams were rarely anything other than pleasant. Been meaning to ask if anyone else experiences this.

I've had this happen to me a few times. Usually with the stronger cigars, it makes me feel all buzzy and tingly, like my nerves are all firing lightly. It's an odd sensation for sure.

I would suggest having your wife hit you on the head with an anvil, just prior to going into a prone position...

Side effects can vary. Consult your physician.

Of course if I were you, I might consider quitting smoking and start playing with plastic bags!

Its funny because its true.  On an occasion Ill have a smaller cigar (PC or half corona) and maybe 1 or 2 beverages to go with and I'm wide awake and can't sleep.  My normal is to have a larger cigar (Pyrimide, Churchill) with 3+ scotches and I sleep like a baby.

I'd say to look at any other variables. Why have they concluded that it's cigar smoking? I do have bouts of insomnia occasionally and will, at stupid o'clock, sit out with a cigar which does seem to help me sleep. Though I am aware that extending my sleeplessness deliberately by an hour may be the thing that does it.

Same here. And if a few more beers don't help bring out the rum bottle....B)

I have problems with coffeine and sleep, but I smoke 7 to 9 sticks a day in Havana and never had sleeping problems last 15 years.

Same here when I smoke more than three sticks or so in an evening.
