Things I know nothing about.....and really don't want to.

I learnt on the weekend that not all coolant is the same. Since when? How embarrassing

  1. Tools.  Never did understand them. Never will understand them.  I hurt myself with them. Sorry Smithy.
  2. Cars.  When Artie pulled up in his half mill bentley.....all I could say was "nice car". Artie regaled me for 5 minutes on all its features. I understood one tenth of it.
  3. Wine.  i was involved in a wine business and  I still can't consistently blind taste the difference between Shiraz, Cabernet, Grenache and Malbec. i do like to drink it however!
  4. Technology.  compared to Ken I am Steve Jobs.  I successfully "use" technology. I don't "understand" technology.
  5. Financial planning. When Artie hits the whiteboard and details unit trusts across the globe my eyes glaze and I think of bonefish and las salinas.
  6. Kites:  OK it's in the air....now what.

Add yours :D

Wine...love it but don't care about the history about it like I do w cigars

Engines and Car Repairs.....huge Racing fan but could care less about the moving parts and how to fix them

Financial Market/Investing....just don't get it but as long as I am making money I don't care to know more

Fantasy Sports...love watching sports but who has time to track all of the weekly stats, etc

Home Brew....no desire to make my own beer but love gardening, go figure

Bit Coin....again, probably should read up on this but really not interested

Ditto to Financial matters. So long as I have enough for cigars, Scotch and the occasional trip to Europe I'm a happy man.

Also ditto to Fantasy sports. Ugh. Like D&D for mundanes, and they call us weird for enjoying Game of Thrones.

The fascination with celebrity. I don't get it, don't want to get it, don't care a whit.

Skiing and snowboarding. Good gawd, man, when it's @#$%ing COLD outside, and my bollocks feel like icecubes, why the actual !%&+ would I want to voluntarily subject myself to that?! Time to crank the thermostat up, pour a Lagavulin and spark up a nice churchill or a pipe full of Balkan Blue.

Wine? Beer? I don't even like drinking them, let along giving a crap about their history. Cars? I drive one because I'm too damn lazy to walk and I like to carry stuff when I travel.

Jazz. OK, I like it on in the background, especially when "things get fun." The last damned thing I want is some radio announcer telling me about the specific performance, what concert hall it was in, the colour socks the mic engineer was wearing and all the other crap that jazz DJs love to regale you with.

Children. Hated being one, never had one (to my knowledge), never will (to my relief), dislike being around them, especially the ones who exist to excrete and scream 24/7. No offense to all you loving dads out there (and may yours be wonderful, brilliant, successful, do the chores around your house and find a great nursing home for you in a few decades), but I never had that desire. My wife feels even stronger on the subject, bless her cold, dark misanthropic heart.

Oh, cricket? I was in London for a month a few years back, and I invariably listened to LBC London news over breakfast each morning. On comes what they call the cricket report from Ashes or whatever the tournament is called. I swear the words coming out of the announcer's mouth were English words, but darned if I could understand a sentence. Word Salad, essentially. Watching rugby at the pub made up for it.

MMA fighting. Why.

#Opera, ballet, musicals. I've tried/had them forced on me/know and dearly love people into all of the above but all leave me cold. To the point when it annoys me when I know something about them accidentally.
#Dogs. Controversial I'm sure but they're generally stupid, needy and smelly IMHO. If your dog tries to lick, nuzzle or mount me I will kick it. I don't understand them or the desire to own one.
#Tech systems. I use a smartphone, tablet and PC daily and competently but don't have a clue about what makes them work. When FoH was recently updated there was a thread about the background problems which might as well have been in Chinese script for all that I understood. Don't need to know, other people do, good enough for me.
#Empathy - struggle with this, but working on it. Slap on a fake concerned look and say the things they want to hear. I think that's how it works...
Apart from that lot I'm pretty open and willing to learn, honest.

Left v Right social politics- why is everyone always shouting at each other?
Left Wing Militant Feminism- why are all these women shouting at me?
Electricity- Invisible death, as I like to call it. Am more mechanically minded by nature, prefer things I can see moving, especially if theyre going to kill me
The imperial system or measurement- Seriously, Fahrenheit users, come over to metric, its much easier
Corn Cob Pipes- They smoke like crap and have almost no redeeming features but there is a sub set of the pipe smoking community that LOVE them
Apple Products- There's every other tech company in the world, and then there is Apple. Everything they make costs twice what an equivalent PC product would. Their product support is lousy and they constantly re-invent the wheel creating proprietary interfaces that only their products can use and they can manufacture. If their stuff wasn't so good (I'm told), they'd be a cautionary tale on how not to run a tech company
Banking- how can a business that's only service is to hold onto your money make billions every year? How are they allowed to loan me money (that they don't have/own) for 3 decades on the promise i'll pay it back, whose money did I spend? what if he wants it back?

#1 & #2 - so if you're out on a date and you get a flat you make the lady get out and change the tyre?
#3 - so Ken was right!
#4 - ok i'll give you that, not everyone has the mind to understand it all.
#5 - financial planning is easy. the planners make the money while you lose it.
#6 - lose the baby kites, try to do something like this without them ending up in a tangled mess on the ground;

rule #3 is always correct. if you think it is not, refer rule #3.

1. cars - I know lots of places that will fix stuff.

2. tools - yeah, me too. I have them - for others to use.

3. gardening - I can grow dandelions, that's about it.

4. movie stars - wifie knows everything, I'd rather stick needles in my eyes.

Edit: oh, and braile on a drive through ATM machine. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

The keypads are mass produced. Why would you make a separate keypad without the Braille dots just for drive-thru ATMs?

I'm just saying, they're inadvertently encouraging blind people to drive, by being cheap:D

Or make everyone pay higher fees to make separate keypads.

Oh, but Cricket IS available here in the States if you live in an area that has a lot of people from South Asia (India/Pakistan/Bangladesh) like I do. They even have special cricket supply stores and there are always a bunch of guys playing at the park across the street from the apartments I grew up in. I've tried following games, but it's a bit like baseball in that there are a lot of idiosyncracies. Maybe I'll see if they have a beginner's game or league someday.

1. Cars - I can change oil, change a tire... In theory I understand how to replace brake pads. But just because I CAN do those things doesn't mean I ever WANT to do those things. A couple of years back, I had a blowout in my stepdad's car on 580 in Oakland. Was barely able to get my car off the freeway. Then it took me a good 90 minutes to change the tire with the crappy stock jack that comes from the dealer while cars are whizzing past me. Come to find out, there was a hydraulic jack in the car the entire time. D'oh. My body hurt for 5 days afterwards. This qualifies as a car repair success story for me.

2. NASCAR - No thank you.

3. Poker - It's a fine game. Just not for me

4. Fashion - Would be obvious to anyone who sees how I dress.

The hardest thing about changing brake pads, just like changing a tire, is getting the lugs off.  Tire shops use air wrenches and overtorque the lugs to the point where if you don't have a breaker bar to use with your lug wrench (or an extendable aftermarket wrench), you'll be lucky to get the wheel off the car without breaking something.  It definitely helps to have a good jack and stands, but it's all useless if you can't break the lugs.

My contribution to the topic is the show Game of Thrones.  Tried watching it early on, zero interest.

Cars...Love them. Have a 79 Z28 Camaro sitting in extra garage that I know nothing about and probably never will. I do enjoy driving it though. Will have someone restore it when the time is right. Will be getting a Jaguar F type when I retire, which will be in 10-12 years. I work for the state government so...

technology...I use a computer on a daily basis at my job. I can get around one but that's about it. Use a smart phone for most everything.

Tools...I have some but rarely use them. we hire things out that need repairing.

Yard work...Hire that out too. Although I wouldn't mind having a tractor to brush hog the fields on our property.

I live in the Midwest, not available around these parts :).  Even if it was I would not be interested in learning more about it or watching it.  I'll stick to watching the Cubs in the playoffs.

Awesome thread.

Wine - I like red, I like white, some are sweet, some are dry.  After that I'm out, not interested in the deeper nuances.  I'm sure the wine people feel the same way about us.

Cars - I can change a flat tire and I like driving fast.  Don't get Nascar (but never been to a live event) or the obsession with old muscle cars.  I have always wanted a Porsche.

Technology - I switched to Apple products a few years ago because they just f***ing work.  I hate all the compatibility issues with MS/PCs.  Probably better now but since I lost all photos of my first born from the first 6 weeks of her life because of some registry error BS,  I have never looked back.  The PCs I have to use at work are still POS.

MicroBrews - most are undrinkable.  Also never had an IPA or stout that I really liked.  Sorry Guinness fans.  A cold pilsner in the summer is great.

Sports - love baseball and the NFL.  This is the best time of year for sports. Have been getting back into the NBA the past few years but the Knicks remain a sorry organization.  Don't get college football: inferior play compared to the pros, teams switching conferences for financial reasons makes it even harder to follow and the NCAA may be the most hypocritical organization in the US (next to Congress).  A real playoff is an improvement. Cricket looks too confusing.  Rugby looks cool but don't know the rules and never see it where I live.  Don't care for soccer, but I had a lot of fun watching the World Cup in 2010 in the hospital I was working at with about 20 other people, many of whom were immigrants from Latin America who were really into it.

Golf - I started playing last year so I wasn't the only one in the office during golf outings.  Game is ok but I could do without.  Picture two grown men driving around the fairway in an electric cart looking for a little white ball. I feel silly sometimes.  But I can smoke three cigars in one round.  If not for that, I probably wouldn't play.  I never understood the whole country club scene until I realized it was just a place for men to get away from their families.  The subculture it still too pretentious for me and I'd rather spend my money elsewhere (e.g. here).

Iced coffee - if it was good why do you have to put all that other crap in it.  It looks like something that comes out of an oil well.

Fine watches - How can you spend thousands of dollars on one?  I have not worn a watch since college. It may have been a Swatch.  If I want to know what time it is, I look at my phone, computer or clock on the wall.  I'll save it for the Porsche fund or an Aristocrat.

Gambling - I love Vegas but have never even put a quarter in a slot machine.  I'm afraid that I would like it too much, especially if I got into blackjack and poker.

I have two kids and one dog.  These sentiments are absolutely hilarious.  I do love my kids, the dog not so much.

This post was written while smoking an HU Majestic.  I love the vitola but the flavor didn't do much for me.  It tasted a little young.  It had been resting for three months but it was a single...

I'd love to say the same about my Giants, but not this year.
