I heard from friends in Havana a little over an hour ago. While the waves were high and there was lots of wind, rain and some flooding, it seems Havana was spared and my friends there are OK. Some buildings that were already in poor condition did collapse but the winds there were more reflective of a tropical storm and did not reach hurricane strength. Lots of downed trees, some of which caused damage and roofs that were blown appears seems to be the worst of it

This is the airport in Cayo Coco. Some hotels are severely damaged, some gone. Pullman, Melia, Iberostar, are almost total loss. The causeway is broken in 3 parts.Good news i that already started to fix it.

i think it's catastrophic at multiple scales, surely will affect cigar industry too. At least the Cayos are out of business for several months, if not years. I fee veryl sorry for the people living in that area, they lost almost everything from jobs to belongings.

It looks like PDR avoided the worst of it, some rain and wind, but not much else. Gordon Mott was able to get a hold of Hirochi Robaina. Unless Jose hits hard, hopefully this season moves forward without much issue. The same areas that Irma just hit got hit last year as well. The rebuilding process is going to be long, there will certainly be fuel and building material shortages for the foreseeable future. Hopefully they can get a break for a couple years.

I talked on the phone with some friends there in Havana a few hours ago. Much of the population around Havana is still without power or running water. Cell and internet services are improving. I know after cancelling flights Sunday and Monday, some commercial flights will be arriving on Tuesday into the airport. At least that is what is scheduled at this time.

Just horrible.  Not just for Cuba but also those other Caribbean nations that got hit hard. :(  Anyone know which organizations to send donations to that will result in money being directly allocated to Cuba?

I don't think Cuba will officially accept donations, much less from NGO's.
And the money would disappear into "official channels".
I believe only personally delivered support with stuff and money will be practical.

Thanks for the insight Nino.  Money disappearing and not making it to those in need is what I was afraid of.  Some locals are planning to go down to Havana in November. If we raise any money, they'll take it down.  Hopefully, airports will get sorted out and restoration of services will be well underway by then.

That is my experience from helping ( with great support from the Canadian brothers !! ) the Lung Kong society in HAV.
They even asked us NOT to use the word donation for fear of retribution from gvt sources....

I will be there in Nov. as well but not so hopeful about restoration of anything but the tourist areas .... It's Cuba, remember

Thats hard to look at. El Litoral was going to be closed for a while regardless......

@nino,  I'll be there in November as well. If you know of any way that I can help while we are there, let me know.

Thanks @Corylax18 much appreciated !!

Shoot me a PM and we see what we can do - at the very least we can help the Cuban cigar industry and the rollers by smoking a few cigars together  B)

Dunno, while I can certainly understand that rationale, I find comments of that kind always a bit inept.
