Do you think cigars taste different dependant on where you smoke them ?

I tried a few different cigars whislt in Cuba and absolutely loved them. Since bringing them home they haven't tasted the same at all. They were smoother, more flavoursome, more enjoyable.

Has anyone else experienced a similar thing ?

I know there are many variables with cigars but whilst I enjoyed them in Cuba, they aren't as enjoyable back at home.

That's interesting. I've heard the exact opposite from another dear friend 'of the leaf' (i.e. cigars smoked in Cuba were not as good as smoked at home). I suppose these things depend on your personal environment conditions and (palate) preferences.

Can't comment on Cuba vs. back home, but I'm never really surprised when my enjoyment of a cigar varies from place to place or from time to time. Way too many variables involved in the smoking experience for me to expect the "same" one every time I smoke a particular cigar.

I haven't been to Cuba yet. But 'variability' seems to be the one 'constant' when it comes to cigars. Not just in taste. Also, in quality of draw, burn, etc.

For me this shows up when I smoke what is 'the perfect cigar' and later smoke another from the same box which is 'good', but didn't reach that same level as the previous one.

Its a mystery.

Have you ever had an exceptional bottle of wine with your best friends, only to revisit that exact same brand and vintage and be mildly disappointed?

There are many factors that go into enjoying a drug experience, internal and external.

When you are in a great place, having a wonderful time with people you love, literally everything is better.

My guess is that you had a remarkable vacation in Cuba, and the cigars you smoked were enjoyed more due as much to this as the cigars themselves...

Personally i like the lingering smoke aroma. In Cuba, unless in a lounge, it's always windy, so if there is a downside to smoke a cigare in Cuba for me is that.

Remember, it’s not wether you like a particular cigar anymore, it’s how you react to it :D

I agree that the variables are plentiful. I’ve even chalked up a few mediocre experiences to my mood at the time.

Taking inconsistency (and geography) out of the equation, I've always found that smoking indoors renders cigars more similar, while smoking outdoors reveals more definable characteristics. This is not to say that good cigars become bad indoors, or that bad cigars become good outdoors.

I think you mean dependent?

100% believe in this.

It's not the cigar you enjoyed, but rather who you enjoyed it with!

 Mr. pig,

What is this SOBRIETY that you speak of? I don't understand the concept.

Shouldn’t it be Percent Sobriety? :P

Absolutely so, yes.

The entirely subjective vagaries of mood and company aside, I reckon that external factors do matter.  Ambient humidity, temperature, altitude ... IMO, these can all play into the taste.  For example, when I go skiing, I regularly find that the same marca/vitola from the same box fired up on the same day will offer up a different taste experience depending on whether I smoke them up on the mountain at 10,000 feet or down in the valley at 6,000 feet.

For a start, those cigars will have travelled and aged in the time between smoking them in Cuba and back home.  Both of those factors will affect the taste.

Happens all the time.

My experience is the opposite. I enjoy the cigars here far more than I do in Cuba.

All Cuban divans are overhumidified (at least to my taste).

If you are going from Oz on a 30+ hour odyssey the cigars you take from here can hit a little travel sickness and be below their best.

If it is a relatively short flight, no such problems. You are in a good mood often with mates in a beautiful city with beautiful people and lashings of music and dance. Everything tastes great! :D

Of course, the food I've eaten (even as much as 24 hours previously) also can make a great difference in how a cigar tastes to me.

There absolutely is something to that, in my opinion.  I think cigars smoked in Colorado absolutely taste different than cigars smoked at sea level.  I'm not sure if it's altitude or whether it is relative humidity, but I suspect it is a little bit of each.  I wouldn't say better or worse necessarily, but I have noticed a difference between the monte 4s  I light up at home and those I bring home at Christmas to smoke with my dad and brother.
