Home sick today, so while i'm entering this comp, thought i'd make it a practical café-cigar themed tour to clue FOHers in on some easy places to get to in town.

Wellington is a harbour city with the highest density of cafes and restaurants in the southern hemisphere, or so they say. Add coffee roasters to that.

7am or is that 11am? Fly in, cab or walk 20min along the beach to Maranui café, Lyall Bay.  It's got a few tables on a balcony outside for your early morning cigar and coffee, brunch. Some interesting beers on tap as well.

15 min bus or cab into Havana Coffee roastery in town. One of the first coffee roasters here back in the 80s. Have a chat to the pros, go cupping/coffee tasting, get them to mix your own blend.

Same people own an iconic café 10 min walk away - Fidel's. Plenty of period photos and more recently a takeaway coffee cup design that borrows from one of our favourites. Big menu and outdoor smoking area.

Digestive promenade time - hit Mt Victoria 45min walk through bush paths or the road pictured to the top for this view. If it's windy - and it generally is - you'll be blown away.

Time for a classic tourist haunt - the Weta workshops and cave. Peter Jackson fan

Head round the peninsula to Oruaiti pa - site of a hill fort for over half a millennia - and the entrance of the harbour. Good place to watch the sunset.

Time for happy hour at this pub which always has 30 beers on tap, some brewed on the premises, and a great outdoor balcony. Grab a bite to eat at any restaurant.

Head back into town for a drink and cigar at this indoor/outdoor bar Ancestral, sheltered heated seats for easy winter smoking and a cocktail.

Voila.

Along with all those great bars and restaurants that Wellington now has to offer, I still believe the greatest thing is to fly into Windy Wellington, best rollercoaster in the world.

Look! It's my favorite fork & brewer!

Sorry... I'm sure everyone says that.

I've met the owner who started it up, he's Scottish, so you definitely know this is no idle f$%^ coincidence

Now can someone please do this for Tokyo, Nara or Osaka...? [Totally selfless request]

I'm about to go to Japan for the first time ever in September. Apart from reading many historical fiction novels set in Japan, and growing up watching their cartoons on French TV, I know nothing of the real thing!!!

What about all the sheep?

It is a sad day but I been told there are now more sheep in Aussie than across the ditch. We have to cuddle up to dairy cows to keep warm here now, and its a good thing they squirt gold out of their udders, cos there's no fleece to hang onto.
