Australia trip - suggestions please

Recommended Posts

Hi all - I'm heading to Australia for the first time in about a month.

We'll be landing in Brisbane and will have about a week to kill with my wife without the kids. Good times!

We like wine  & going out to nice restaurants. We are also up for some tours. Wondering if we should do the great barrier reef? Also heard the outback can be fun...

Anyone have suggestions out there? Would love to hear them. Cheers!

Also agree that Port Douglas would be great. From there you can head to the barrier reef and also the Daintree rainforest. I've done quite a bit of diving there so here's a tip from someone who gets a little seasick. Buy Kwells seasick tablets. The large catamarans can move about quite a bit especially if you are on the upper deck. All the best with it. Can't really help you with wine and restaurants. I'm from Melbourne but I'm sure El Press or Ken or local guys can make some good suggestions. But I'm sure you won't be short of dining options at Port Douglas. But if you are to do this then I would book some accomodation now. It is a very popular destination.

Hit the gold coast for the beach - at least watch the "shark watchers" if you don't go in!

Echoing what @toofargone  said about swimming up there - when we were there, the "sea wasps" (box jelllyfish - deadly) were out. Try and get a boat out to the reef for some snorkelling or (what we did) scuba diving.

Never did the outback.

Oh - and XXXX beer is the best! LOL

The reef blocks waves on the beaches up here.

I live just down the road from Port Douglas, miles are relative in the remote outback.

So Gold Coast for the beaches and surf.

You don't want to waste time in airports with only a week. Research flight times. I find Brisbane dull. But where I live I will often run over five snakes when it rains on the way home, whilst avoiding wandering cattle, kangaroos and wedge-tail eagles get out of the way begrudgingly whilst eating roadkill.

U can fly direct to Uluru (Ayers Rock) nowadays but its pricey & limited flights

A week isn't much time but if you like wine a trip to one of our wine regions would be fun. Direct flights to Adelaide (Adelaide Hills, Barossa wineries) from Brissie then if you really want to see The Rock you can go up the centre from Adelaide to Ayers Rock.

As you can see there's not much around.... stunning scenery tho!

Gday!  For a more unique Aussie adventure and with such a short time available, head north to Townsville and Cairns (Port Douglas) check out the reef, head inland to the Atherton Tablelands. All within an easy drive from each other and all offer great dinning experiences. Perfect time of the year to be in North Oz.. No wineries of note.....For that take the Adelaide option!

Wherever you choose you cannot go wrong.
