Opus X

So I was at my local lounge and was talking to a guy I know, he pulls out some very old Opus X. Then the following week, he gives me these.

Original release 1994 Opus X.

I guess I was misinformed- they're '95 Opus!

I'm definitely going to smoke them- they're at that age where they might have already turned into a faint shadow of the original cigar.

They haven't fallen off the deep end yet.  Just my opinion but smoke one and save one for another year.

Smoked a 1996 not that long ago, still has all the flavors you could wish for. Aged Opuses are hard to beat from a NC standpoint. That beautiful raisin/prune and cinnamon. Yummy yummy.

What do you guys recommend for current production Opus X? It seems like there are 100 variations and I've felt compelled recently to put some down for awhile just to see what all the hype is about

I think all of the variations are kind of ridiculous, with all of the ridiculous names as well. That said, I like Opus X quite a bit. I don't buy the weird/rare stuff, just the regular line, which I buy for a normal price ($8-15 each). I think the petit corona, corona, corona gorda, robusto, double robusto and pyramid are all great sizes for this cigar. The smaller ring gauge ones can be pretty punchy when young.

The Perfecxion No. 2 and Petit Lancero stand out at the top for me. The last Petit Lancero I had just blew me away with its overall balance of Flavors. I very rarely buy NCs anymore and this had me searching out for a box to put down for a nap. When fresh, the Petit Lancero are a bit brash but still so yummy with a nice strong espresso; this little guy packs a punch and will give you a bit of a Nicotine Buzz. The Perfecxion No. 2, with even a year or two of rest, are just refined, elegant, classy and take you on a journey of flavor. The Price of Opus X keeps me at bay, especially when I can stock up on several boxes of hand picked boxes from Prez. I will say that an everyday regular production Hand Picked CC from El Prez's stock will beat out most any Opus X. In terms of all the Charity Boxes, special releases, rare and hard to find vitolas, they are great to look at but the more odd the shape the more so they are rolled purely for looks. 

The Casa Fuente Lancero number one and the Belicoso No. 2 beat out Opus X for me any day.

I prefer my OpusXs with a minimum of 3 years age, optimally 5+ years. I've had them 10 years & older and have never felt that they were past their prime.

Same.  Quit smoking them fresh because I always ended up wretching on the floor...

The petit lancero has always been the standout in my mind, but I've never had any of the really exotic shapes that sell for crazy prices.

For those in the know with Opus, do you find years in which the blend is off or different?  Is there variation or consistency?

Pretty consistent IMO, but i really only know the standard line.

I've had Angel's Share, own some Lost City (waiting for what I don't know) and a dozen Casa Fuente Lanceros, but still haven't dived in.

I like the Casa Fuente when they are fresh, but they fall off a cliff around 6 months. Opus X age very well. They are really good after 5-6 years.

I guess the people that complain about the price must be paying a big markup. I have boxes of Opus and never paid more than $12-14 a stick even for the larger sizes.

I've always liked the Petit Lancero best, and I enjoyed the Robusto enough to buy a box to age. I'm probably in the minority on this one, but I like the recent vintage better than the late-90s pepper bombs. 

I also haven't really gotten into all the line extensions. They're starting to seem a little gimmicky to me.

I don't like most of the line extensions, but the Oscuro Oro was phenomenal. Great cigar, truly great.

I don't think the first releases have the name on the cello.

I have always had the impression that the first Opus X was released in 1997.

This is EXACTLY how I describe a nicely aged Opus.  Good to see another find these flavors.
