Not for the reasons you're thinking of, though, but instead out of respect of social norms in my area, on two fronts. First, the aroma isn't generally appealing to others, and it tends to travel a fair bit. Second, I don't think aggravating our neighbors and fellow citizens does us (as an interest group) any good whatsoever. I would rather win the long game, in a gentlemanly fashion, than make people angry just because I can. This, 1000x this. I, too, am liberal (or downright communist by the cigar community's standards), but that has nothing to do with this, in my opinion. I know I have the right to smoke cigars while walking through my neighborhood, but I also know some of my neighbors probably wouldn't care for it. I think the gentlemanly approach is to do everything within reason to accommodate people who don't wish to be exposed to my cigar smoke. Courtesy and respect still hold a place in society. That's not to say the OP or anyone else who smokes on the street or sidewalk is being discourteous. Different standards certainly apply in different places. But in my neighborhood, I'd consider it improper. So I don't do it. And to echo your second point, I feel like my neighbors are much more likely to support bans and things of that nature if they're exposed to my cigar smoke, than they would be if they never had to see, breathe or smell it. Fighting them would seem like a pretty clear case of perhaps winning a battle but losing the war. I know some people here feel that if we don't exercise and regularly defend our rights, we'll lose them. And there may be some truth to that. But I don't view my neighbors as nefarious people who are out to get me. They're mostly reasonable people who don't care what I do, as long as it doesn't affect them. I don't see any reason to take the fight to them if I can easily accommodate them and peacefully coexist. 2
Puros Y Vino Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 I prefer to enjoy a cigar while seated most of the time. Though I have taken a cigar for a walk now and then. Many times on a beach in Mexico, a walk through a park or walking home from home. I have no qualms about who may be upset. I don't bitch about having to walk behind a cigarette smoker or having to breathe in car exhaust, so I have no issues with lighting up a cigar. 4
beparrish Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 Smoke 'em whenever you have the opportunity. I smoke cigars when I play golf, when I push-mow my yard , when I wash the car and when I take walks. Now, the cigars I smoke during those activities are not my "best" cigars, but they're not dog-rockets either. I save my "best" for when I'm able to sit back and focus on the cigar. But IMO, there's nothing wrong with smoking a cigar on a walk. 2
canadianbeaver Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 We smoke cigars anywhere and everywhere the activity is allowed and the timing is right. We don't smoke if we think we will make the place offend anyone with cigar smoke. We always ask, "Is it ok if we smoke a couple of cigars?" if it is not our place and others are there. Not a big deal. And we always have a couple of extra if someone wants to join us to make the experience better. CB 4

I respect and appreciate both your efforts in not wanting to offend anyone and respecting the people around you, but I would like to point out that if someone is in the process of walking whilst smoking, the people around him or her would only have to tolerate the smell for a few seconds. Personally, if I was smoking whilst on a walk, I would simply ignore anyone whiny enough to voice their disapproval. I wouldn't waste a moment on them. That said, I don't walk around whilst enjoying a cigar. I prefer to be seated and relaxed and I am always a polite cigar smoker. 5
raymond5737 Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 I tend to not smoke in public, so if it is between going out or staying in, I typically choose the latter. Where, when and what I smoke all depends on what I'm doing. I chose the cigar for the task. If I'm watering the lawn or cutting the grass, I'll smoke something that is less expensive, short, flavorful but not too strong. If I'm walking around a lake or a golf course, I'll smoke something big, long and mild. If I'm reading a book, I'll smoke something more complex that I can contemplate while reading. If I'm playing cards with my friends, I'll go long and thin. And if I'm out in the shed in the middle of winter with my heater on, I'll grab something short and tasty. 1

I could care less about others opinions. If I want a cigar I have a cigar. But like Twain says....I smoke them in moderation..only one cigar at a time ;-) when I smoke in public I take the band off. For no other reason except that I don't feel like having a conversation about where, why or whatever relating to my Cuban . + 1 Actually I'm a bit perplexed that a wife's opinion would be considered in regards what a man does on a walk, - unless walks are limited to your living room. Also, the criticism is based on appearances, and is even less worthy of attention. IMO, if you like to smoke while walking, do it. As long as you don't stop & blow smoke in people's faces, or do so on their property , you violate no one else's natural rights by doing so. 1
topdiesel Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 It should be a good pairing if you like to walk. I don't like to walk. Smoking a cigar doesn't make it any more pleasant. 1
Popular Post Akela3rd Posted June 29, 2017 Author Popular Post Posted June 29, 2017 To clarify: my darling wife's main objection is that she feels smoking (anything) on the street isn't particularly classy. I however don't give a flying one what people may or may not think about me smoking a cigar, wherever I am. In this we're coming from very different perspectives - she's in the fashion business and is hyper-conscious of what other people perceive, whereas I'm a Northern oik and have no concern for other's view of me. Yes, I'm her bit of rough and have been for 23 years! 5
BrightonCorgi Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 Smoking a cigar on the sidewalk does not exude class, but I don't see anything wrong with it. In my city (Boston) you can't smoke outside anywhere on public property. I feel that is absurd, but since tobacco smoke is so dangerous; even being 100's of yards away outside puts the community at risk.
GasGuy82 Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 At least once or twice a week I smoke a cigar while walking the dogs through our neighborhood. The dogs usually get walked right before bed. This is after dinner, the dishes are done, preparations have been made for the next day and the wife has gotten some of that "quality time" she is always talking about. Thus, it's usually after 9:30PM and closer to 10 when I light up. Our walk is about 25 minutes and I'll finish the cigar on the patio when I return. I almost never see another soul. Occasionally I see a retired gentleman walking his dogs and drinking a beer. From time to time I also smell someone smoking a cigar in their yard. Many times I've wanted to stop and ask what they are burning. So long as you aren't at the playground during normal hours, I don't think most people really care. On another note, one of my fondest memories happened during a 10 hour lay over in Paris en route to Namibia. My father, brother and I had a nice long lunch at Le Comptoir and proceeded to have a leisurely stroll back through the streets and across the river while enjoying an after meal cigar. 2
Spanishcedar Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 I thought we lived in a world that idolizes tolerance. Hmmmm... ... or is that just when it fits one's agenda? 4
CaptainQuintero Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 If you can, do! Personally I end up with it going out on me or puffing on a cigar that has gone way too hot so swore off it.

Everyone lives in different neighborhoods, I live in the burbs, but when I go for a walk I find there are often quite a few kids and families out and about. HOWEVER...I just don't take puffs when there's kids or other pedestrians in my immediate vicinity. I don't care if they like the smell or not, I'm more concerned with not making anyone breathe my secondhand smoke against their will. I've never gotten any complaints from anyone, but I do make a point of being courteous. When we live in a society where one cannot feel comfortable smoking a cigar in the open air, political correctness has run amok. 2

I'd quibble with your last line a bit, because I think there's more nuance to the issue, but I certainly understand the sentiment. 1
canadianbeaver Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Good morning from open air Ontario, where a lovely drive from Toronto can suddenly fill with farmland cow manure. They cover fields for fertilizer, sometimes with sheep shit too. My lovely country tour, costing time and fuel, with my honey, Mr Beaver. And then a run over skunk too. Peee-yooofff! But mmmmmmmmm... the smell of a Cuban cigar. Ahhhhhh. CB 3

There's nuance to every issue, in fact, I wish people would acknowledge how gray our world is instead of living in the black and white so much. The polarization of society has gotten out of control, to the point I find that I can't have a meaningful conversation about many topics with people on both ends of the political spectrum, because so many people are hardened in their views that they can't even have pleasant discourse with people from different viewpoints. It leads to a world where everyone yells and screams but nobody listens and thinks. Many people would take what I said (when we live in a society where one cannot feel comfortable smoking a cigar in the open air, political correctness has run amok), and interpret that you should be able to smoke a cigar in the open air, any time you'd like, consequences be damned. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you're at a concert surrounded by children and you're sitting the lawn, you shouldn't smoke a cigar even if you are allowed (I saw a guy doing this at a family-friendly concert a few weeks ago). You should either move away from others, or not smoke. No 5-year old should have to inhale smoke, whether you're allowed to or not. The bigger issue is how many thoughtless, inconsiderate people are in the world, but that's a little trickier to solve... 6

I find it very hard to just sit and smoke, I usually have to be doing something even if it's just reading. Bike/car maintenance, gardening, DIY, or walking somewhere are all favourite times for a cigar. And, I'll choose the cigar to go with the task at hand. A Monte 2 gives plenty of time for a good bike hub rebuild and makes the job much more pleasant for example.Thunder & Lightening '75-'15 1
