Sorry to say but I can see that you have NOT traveled that much outside of the U.S.A. !!!!!!!!!!!

Guy

HHHmmm,   A, I'm from the UK,,, B, I've travelled all over the world, including two years spent in Antarctica.   It was a passing comment, based on the fact the Spain seems to have a huge cigar culture, but my time in France it's seemed a little less in your face.  I would suggest calming down

Production up 25%.

Prices up 3-10%.

???

This Harvest will only be ready to be rolled mid/late next year or early 2019. You would think prices would go back down at that point, but we all know that's not going to happen.

i consider that as bad news since the price was up again on 2016 release and any vintage year non LE or regional sales cigars

What has the Cuban's leaf tonnage been the last 5 or so years, I wonder.

According to these articles:

Average crop was 40,370 tons around 2004:

http://www.latinamericanstudies.org/cuba/harvest.htm

It did pick up in 2015, however, with 24,500 metric tons produced, compared to 19,800 metric tons the previous year, according to Cuba’s National Office of Statistics and Information. Land planted in tobacco also was up significantly in 2015 compared to the previous four years.

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/americas/cuba/article92667462.html

https://www.havanainsider.com/cubas-2014-2015-cigar-harvest-best-in-recent-years/

Confirms annual averages of ~43,000 tons from 1986-1990, falling precipitously to lows of 17,000 tons in 1993, recovering back to 50,000 tons in 1997 and 37,000 tons in 1998 attributed to an infusion of cash by Altadis before their official acquisition of their 50% stake. Around 2000 production was 30,600 tons:

https://books.google.com/books?id=o9ODxqsr-dIC&pg=PA310&lpg=PA310&dq=cuban+tobacco+harvest+tons&source=bl&ots=KvG5FlFA1X&sig=umeup2FisG15HWXVrGWktyyWOo0&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjR-4uSgrTUAhXk5oMKHaBCD10Q6AEIWzAM#v=onepage&q=cuban tobacco harvest tons&f=false

https://books.google.com/books?id=NGjxCQAAQBAJ&pg=PA158&lpg=PA158&dq=cuban+tobacco+harvest+tons&source=bl&ots=snWIlrtQfM&sig=wVHPjhpmS3NmBb-T23talPLvIT4&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjR-4uSgrTUAhXk5oMKHaBCD10Q6AEIWDAL#v=onepage&q=cuban tobacco harvest tons&f=false

So it appears that the 30,000 tons said to have come from the 16-17 harvest is actually slightly below the historical averages over the last 30 years but is on the higher side over the last 5, and we all know quality has generally been good to very good over the last 5 years.

Well, in a seller's market, the supply doesn't determine prices... unfortunately so.

Surprised to hear France is a big importer!  I bet there all minis

Oh that's actually missing by a mile. France has such a great CC history (just look it up). They are even the first and only nation to have their own marca produced for them. And the French were among those few nations that saved the Cuban cigar industry its ass when USSR said good bye to Cuba. For a reason...

Quite a few seem to be getting the wrong angle on this. It was an off the cuff remark insinuating a old sort of stereotype of an old man in a beret reading the paper and smoking a small Cheroot.

Memo to ones self. Never jest about France again.

You forgot the baguette clenched in his armpit...

Let the jester come - and - we are all here to learn and kill old stereotypes... :D
