Vale Gregg Allman (1947 -2017)

MUSIC legend Gregg Allman, whose bluesy vocals helped propel the Allman Brothers Band to superstardom and spawn Southern rock, died Saturday, his manager said. He was 69.

Allman died peacefully and surrounded by loved ones at his home near Savannah, Georgia, his manager, Michael Lehman, told The Associated Press. He blamed cancer for Allman’s death.

“It’s a result of his reoccurrence of liver cancer than had come back five years ago,” Lehman said in an interview. “He kept it very private because he wanted to continue to play music until he couldn’t.” Allman played his last concert in October as health problems forced him to cancel other 2016 shows. He announced on Aug. 5 that he was “under his doctor’s care at the Mayo Clinic” due to “serious health issues.” Later that year, he cancelled more dates, citing a throat injury. In March, he cancelled performances for the rest of 2017.

Funeral arrangements had not been finalised Saturday. But Lehman said Allman would be buried alongside his late brother, founding Allman Brothers guitarist Duane Allman, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, where the band got its start nearly five decades ago.

May he rest peacefully besides his dear brother and fellow rock legend, Duane!

Love that he stayed true to the unique Allman Brothers sound throughout. Definitely one of my generation’s blues icons.

As I am 38, he was one of the very few guys I consider a true legend that I was able to see live literally dozens of times. Wish I had seen Duane! ABB would come to the Beacon Theatre in NYC and play like 5 nights in a row back when I was in high school....and my long-haired hippy buddies and I would go to see all of them. RIP and thanks for the great music and memories!

I have a huge collection of Allmann Brothers music on this very phone.

I admit, I have not seen or followed his life closely in many years.

But I listen to his music all the time.

RIP

Gregg will certainly be missed.  I only get to har him a couple of times, but that was in my college years.  The Allmans used to practice in an old barn in our end of town when I was quite small (6-7ish), and while I really don't remember, friends of my folks definitely do. Thry told stories of hanging out and partying and listening to music.  Had I been older....   This was circa '74 or so, well after Duane passed. When I grew up they were certainly a favorite band. I did some work for a gentleman that owned the barn when I was about 17 or 18.   He was unable to pay me and let me take a couple old amplifiers that had been left behind since the property had been sold and the barn was to be razed. I remember being in complete awe that those tweed boxes had belonged to them and used to wonder what songs had been played through them.

Sad loss.

I will listen to some good ole ABB songs tonight and remember the pleasure they gave me back then.
RIP Gregg

Remember this song driving down the Autoroute to Spain in a Mini Cooper ... Couldn't get enough of it.
